Friday saw the elementary children, well, in their Ag, Au and Pt.
The school closed slightly early on Friday – so that the upper elementary children could get back to the school later in the evening, eagerly looking forward to a night of star watching.
Now, many of these upper elementary children have been working on the ideas of the universe for quite a while. Also, the school seems to have acquired a brand new and a very fine (high resolution) astronomical telescope recently – the details of which I would share with you later. இது சுமார் 17 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் நான் பணி புரிந்து கொண்டிருந்த நிறுவனத்தின் ‘உள் சுற்றுக்காக’ — சீண்டல் நடையில் எழுதிய ஆங்கில மூலக் கட்டுரை – கடும், காராசார விவாதங்களுக்கு அடிகோலியது.
பின்னர் இது, மற்ற நிறுவனங்களில் பணி புரிந்து கொண்டிருந்த என்னுடைய பல ‘மென்பொருள்’ சார் நண்பர்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கப் பெற்று – திட்டுக்களையும், ’காட்டிக் கொடுத்து விட்டாயே எட்டப்பா!’ போன்ற ஒப்புதல் வாக்குமூலங்களும் பெற்றது., பின்னர், பல மற்ற தொழிற்களில் ’கட்டமைப்பாளர்களாக’ இருப்பவர்களும் பரவலாக என்னைத் திட்ட ஏதுவாகியது.
சுமார் நான்கு மாதங்களுக்கு முன் இக்கட்டுரையை – மென்பொருள் தொழில் சார்ந்து இயங்கும் அல்லது மென்பொருட்காரர்களுடன் பொதுவாகப் பரிச்சயம் உள்ள, என் கருத்தில் மரியாதைக்குரிய பாண்டித்யமுள்ள/சிந்திக்கும் திறமையுள்ள ஐந்து இக்கால இளைஞர்களுக்கு அனுப்பினேன் – அவர்களுடைய கருத்துக்களைப் பெற்றேன் – ஊக்க போனஸாக, சில ஆங்கிலத் திருத்தங்களையும்.
இவர்கள் பெரும்பாலும், என்னுடைய பழைய கருத்துக்கள் இப்போதும், இவ்வளவு ஆண்டுகளுக்குக்குப் பிறகும் – நிகழ்கால நடைமுறைக் கந்தறகோளத்தை எதிரொலிப்பதாகத்தான் கருதுகின்றனர். இந்தப் பொறுமைசாலிகளுக்கு என் நன்றிகளுடன் அவர்களுடைய கருத்துகள் சிலவற்றை, என் கட்டுரையில் சேர்க்கவும் முயற்சித்திருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், இக்கட்டுரை (காட்டுரை??) யில் உள்ள பிழைகள், கருத்துக் குதிப்புகள், ஆற்றாமைகள் எல்லாம் என்னுடையவையே – ஆக, என்னுடைய தவறுகளுக்கு, பாவம் இவ்விளைஞர்களை நீங்கள் தயவுசெய்து குற்றம் சொல்லக் கூடாது, சரியா? (இவர்களுடைய குறிப்புகள் குறித்த ஆவணங்கள் இப்பதிவின் முடிவில், பிற்சேர்க்கைகளாக, தனியாகத் தரவிறக்கம் செய்து கொள்ள ஏதுவாக…)

Am at the terrace of my home – trying to view the stars, but the resident haze does not permit much – only a weeping moon is visible, nestled in Capricornus… Could not identify a single planet, including the one that I am living on and off.
Or, it merely so happened that at this time, I could not see any planet – may be local conditions are responsible, dunno. I Squint, try hard to view at least a few comforting constellations or at least, some telltale signs of them, but nothing is visible – but for an Ameriki satellite on a NearEarthOrbit, streaking north -> southwards.
… Have been thinking about what kind of planet are we going to leave behind for our next generation, if we don’t all prematurely go up in a mushroom cloud, that is. Read the rest of this entry »

… திரைப்படப் பேருரைகளினால் என் தலை கொத்தப்பட்டு, என் தலையிலிருந்து நெடுங்குருதி பீறிட்டடிக்க, பனி மூட்டத்துக்கிடையில், நான் மூச்சிரைக்க ஒடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். உலகத்தின் தொன்மையையும் தனிமையையும் நினைவுபடுத்திக்கொண்டு எவ்வளவு பேர் இப்படி ஓடுவதை அந்த நெடும்பனிமூட்டம் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்திருக்கும். அந்தத் தன்னளவில் தனியான மூச்சிரைப்பும் இப்படி எவ்வளவு பனி மூட்டங்களைப் பார்த்திருக்கும். ஆனால், எல்லா மூச்சிரைப்புக்களும் வெவ்வேறுதானே? ஆனாலும் மூச்சென்பது, மூக்குக்கு ஒன்றுதானே!
எத்தனை மனிதக் கண்கள் இப்பனிமூட்டங்களைத் தீண்டியிருக்கின்றன. யாவும் கடந்து பனிப்படலம் ஆகாசம் நோக்கி உயர்ந்தபடியே தான் நெடுந்தனியாள் என்று தனக்குத்தானே சொல்லியபடியே புகையும் நீரும் காற்றுமாக நின்று கொண்டிருக்கிறது. பல்லாயிர வருடங்களில் நினைவுகளை இந்தப் பனிப்படலம் தனக்குள் எப்படிப் பொதித்து வைத்திருக்கும். அதன் இருப்பின் வழியாகவே வாழ்வு மகத்தானது எனக் காண்பிக்கும் அதனூடே எத்தனை பகலிரவுகளாகக் காலத்தைக் கடந்து, இலக்கில்லாமல் நான் ரத்தம் சொட்டச்சொட்ட ஓடிக்கொண்டே யிருக்கிறேன்… மனித வாழ்வின் சோகங்கள் இப்படியான நெடுங்குருதி நெடும்பயணங்கள் தாமோ? எவ்வளவு நெடும்பயணங்கள் இப்படி… … … ஆ! அய்யோ!!

The so called ‘traditional wisdom’ has it that ‘little boys will always be little boys’ and so by extension, ‘little girls will always be little girls.’
How I have always resented, if not deeply hated the set of unjust assumptions and squirmed whenever such statements were uttered by folks who should know better… But, whatever little that I could do – either in my class or elsewhere – and whenever I see a hint of this asinine stereotyping, I try my best to debunk it.
In fact, I would say with arrogant conviction that, the girls in my classes tend to eventually outshine, outsmart, outmaneuver and outclass the boys – this would be in ALL subjects. Read the rest of this entry »

Yes.
In spite of what Douglas Hofstadter has to say about music (on as to why we love it), groups like Pink Floyd seem to have been able to make some good music that is likely to live far beyond that of the bands or their members.

Revolution over IP என்கிற (=RoIP என்கிற) இணையத்தின் மீது கட்டமைக்கப் பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் புரட்சிப் ப்ரொடொகாலை நிர்மாணித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். மேலும். .rev (=revolution) என்கிற உயர் நிலை வலைதளப் பகுப்பிற்காகவும் (top level domain) ஆதரவு சேகரம் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். புரட்சியை நோக்கிய தந்திரோபாயங்கள் இவை என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியவருவதால், உள்ளபடிக்கு எனக்கும் சந்தோஷம்தான்.

Sri Wendell Berry happens to be one of my favourite poet-essayist-novelist-farmer-educationist-activist swarajists (if there is such a term), who practices what he sermonizes. And, I am sure you would agree that this species of real swarajists is a fast dwindling one and is truly endangered.
Au contraire, this species can also be dangerous, as they can look at the world through new possibilities, contexts and history – and question & undermine our uncalled-for assumptions. We merely need to be open, that’s all.

சரி. ஒப்புக் கொள்கிறேன். அவன் ஒன்றும் பெரியதாகச் செய்து கிழித்து விடவில்லைதான். நானும் கம்பராமாயணம் முழுக்கவெல்லாம் படித்துக கரைத்துக் குடித்தவனில்லை – ஆகவே என் அரைகுறைப் படிப்பு தந்த அதிகாரத்தில், அற்பகுஷியில், நானும் இப்படித்தான் நினைக்கிறேன்.
என்ன பெரியதாகப் புடுங்கி விட்டான் இந்தக் கொம்பன்? நேரடித் தன்மையும், புதிய பைந்தமிழ்ச் சொல்லாடல்களும் ( = ’ஜிங்குச்சான்’) கொண்டு வீரிட்டெழும் நம் திரைப்படப் பாடல் எழுத்தாளர்களின் வீரியத்துக்கும், ஆழத்துக்கும் வீச்சுக்கும் எதிரில் – இந்தக் கம்பன் எம்மாத்திரம்!
நம்மவர்கள் அடலேறுகள் போல் ஆர்பரித்து முன்னேறிச் சென்றால் – அவன் வீட்டிலிருந்து கட்டுத்தெறிக்க, விதிர்விதிர்த்து, தட்டுத்தடுமாறி ஓட விட மாட்டானா?
கட்டுத் தறியாவது, கவி பாடுவதாவது, காட்டுக்கோழிக் கறியாவது! ஆழி சூழ் உலகாம் – அண்டப் புளுகாம்…

கடந்த சுமார் 32 வருடங்களாக தூரத்தில் இருந்து நான் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும், மிகுந்த மரியாதை கொண்டிருக்கும் மனிதர்களின் ஒருவர் இந்த அம்மணி மது கிஷ்வர் அவர்கள். ஆழ்ந்த சிந்தனையும், விரிவான படிப்பறிவும், செயலூக்கமும், பாரதத்தைப் பற்றிய கரிசனமும் கொண்ட இவர் — அமைதியாக, அலட்டலில்லாமல் செயல் படுபவர், கொஞ்சமாகப் பேசுபவர். தன்னுடைய எண்ணங்களுக்கும் செயல்களுக்கும் பாபுஜியை ஊற்றுக் கண்ணாகக் கொண்டிருப்பவர் – ஆனால் அவரைப் பற்றிய சில கறாரான விமர்சனங்களும் வைத்திருப்பவர்.
ஒரு தனித்துவமான – இந்தியச் சிந்தனை மரபுகளில், பண்பாட்டுப் பாரம்பரியங்களில் ஊறிய மனமும், உலகத் தத்துவங்களில் ஆழ்ந்த மூளையும் படைத்த இவர், எந்த விஷயத்தையும் ஐயந்திரிபற அறிந்து கொள்ளும் மனப்பான்மையுடையவர். இவரிடம் முட்டியடி எதிர்வினைகளே இல்லை.

பாகம் ஒன்று: ‘இவன் நானில்லை’
இரண்டாம் ராமசாமி எழுதுகிறார்: ஜாதி என்பது என்ன, சமூகத் தட்டுவாரிக் கட்டமைப்பு என்பது எப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு சமூகக்கருவி என்றெல்லாம் புரிந்து கொண்டுதான் பேசுகிறோமா? அதில் ஒரு விஷயம் கூட உதவிகரமாக இல்லையா? காலங்காலமாக மனிதக் கூட்டங்கள், தங்கள் ஒருங்கிணைப்புத் தேவைகளுக்காகவும், சுய சார்புக்காகவும், சுயங்களைப் பண்பாட்டுப் பின்னணிகளில் பொருத்தி முன்னெடுத்துச் செல்வதற்குமான கருவிகள் இல்லையா அவை? உயிர்களின் பரிணாம வளர்ச்சியில், முக்கியமாக, மானுடப் பரிணாமத்தில் தட்டுவாரிக் கட்டமைப்புக்கள் அளிக்கும் சமூகவியல் பங்களிப்புகள் எப்படியானவை?
ஜாதி அபிமானம் என்றால் என்ன? ஜாதி வெறி என்றால் என்ன? ‘ஜாதி ஒழிப்பு’ என்பது சாத்தியமா? மேலும் முக்கியமாக, அது தேவையா? ஜாதிக்கு மாற்றாக எதனை முன்வைக்கிறோம்? திராவிட(!) இயக்கக்(!!) கருத்தாங்களையா(!!!)? கொம்மிஸார்களையா? மதகுரு-முல்லாக்களின் கட்டமைப்பையா? அல்லது நம்முடைய செல்லமான புறநானூற்று வஞ்சித்திணைகளுக்குள் புகுந்துகொண்டு ரத்தத்தில் நீந்தப் போகிறோமா? அல்லது வேறொரு கிரகத்திலிருந்து வேறு எதையாவது இறக்குமதி செய்யப் போகிறோமா?
இது எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த மேட் டிஃப்ஃபீ அவர்களின் கேலிச் சித்திரம் – ஃபெப்ரவர் 2, 2004 அன்று ந்யூயார்க்கர் பத்திரிக்கையில் வந்தது
அல்லது மாற்று என்பதையே பார்க்காமல், வன்முறையே அற்ற சுத்த சன்மார்க்க சத்திய சமூக உலகம் (utopia) ஒன்றை நிறுவப் போகிறோமா?
இவ்விரண்டில் ஒன்றைத் தெரிவு செய்வோமானால், எப்படி அதனைச் சாதிக்கப் போகிறோம்? அந்த அதி உன்னத உலகத்தில் சமூகக் கட்டமைப்பு என்பது எப்படி எதை நோக்கியதாக இருக்கும்?
அல்லது, இவ்விரண்டும் இல்லாமல் பரிணாமப் பாதையில் பின்னோக்கி நகர்ந்து கல்லாய் பாம்பாகிப் பறவையாய்ப் பல் விருகமாகி மரமாகிப் புழுவாய் பூடாய்ப் புல்லாகிப் போய்ச்சேரப்போகிறோமா?

our daily bread (2005) – some reflections

We (at the ErdKinder environment, I mean 12 – 16 year oldsyoungs in our Montessori classroom) get (also) to ‘see’ a lot of films and this ‘Our Daily Bread’ happened to be one of those. And, we had some discussions centred around the film – and, the children had a written ‘test’ to boot a few days later, to collect their thoughts and reflections. More on this, and the content of the ‘question paper’ further down this post…
For anyone who is even remotely concerned with the food (and by extension, our dear life) related issues that our world is facing and especially the mass production and consumption angles – this film is a heart wrenching reminder of the grim situation. The film has little commentary, anyway the moving images speak volumes and volumes – technically also, it is one of the most canonically produced pieces of cinema verite.

நேற்றைய முன்தினம் காலை உள்ளூர் மளிகைக் கடை ஒன்றுக்கு இரண்டு கோழிமுட்டைகள் வாங்கப் போயிருந்தேன். என் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு மதிப்பெண் போடுவதற்காகவோ, சாப்பிடுவதற்காகவோ அல்ல – சில பரிசோதனைகளைச் செய்து காட்டுவதற்காக. முட்டைகளை உபயோகப் படுத்தி பல கணித, இயற்பியல், வேதியியல், உயிரியல் தொடர்பான விஷயங்களைத் தொட முடியும். இதைத் தவிர முட்டை ஏன் உருண்டையாக இல்லை என்பதிலிருந்து பல பொதுப்புத்தி சார்ந்த அற்புதமான வடிவாக்கப் புரிதல்கள் பற்றியும் பேச முடியும். ஏன், கணினியியல் அடிப்படைகள் பற்றிக் கூடப் பேச முடியும். கடந்த இரண்டு வாரங்களாக, என் குழந்தைகளை இந்தப் பரிசோதனைகளுக்குத் தயார்ப் படுத்தியிருக்கிறேன்.

I don’t normally participate in formal social gatherings and avoid like the plague, the ‘spiritual’ get-togethers – especially the ones that proclaim to teach some particular species of meditation or healing or, oh well, even the nirvana, if you will. There is no major reason for it, apart from perhaps a very personal and an intense sociopathic attitude.
Probably I am yet to grow up, and am childishly & endlessly curmudgeonly – these are very valid explanations too, I agree.
But, a few years back, I attended a gathering (of some good souls, many of whom happened to be thoroughbred Gandhians – except one, you know who that was) and there was this oddball chittering NRI (or was she a RNI?) young lady who kept looking at me, me with my flowing beard, unkempt hair, hardcore Tamil ‘saambaarrrr’ accent, faded TShirt, tasteless jokes and a sagely pretension – lost in a reverie. You go to his/her place, after getting quite a few repeated invitations – you live (because you chose not to die in the city) in the outskirts of Bangalore, um, just beyond the hemline to be precise, and so going anyplace means a loooooong drive and lots of initiative.
Even if you muster up sufficient courage and chose to go driving up all the way, your children would chide you for spending so much fuel and for being so environment-unfriendly. In any case, the family knows how the trip is likely to turn out, how you are going to react etc etc, given their prior experience of having dealt with you. They say it in so many words. ஒத்திசைவைப் பொதுவாக அதிகம் பேர் படிப்பதில்லை – மின்னஞ்சல்களில் பதிவுகளைப் படிப்பவர்களைத் பெற்றுக்கொள்பவர்களைத் தவிர, தினம் சுமார் 500 பக்கப் பார்வைகள் (படிப்புக்கள் அல்ல) இதனைப் படித்தால் அது அதிகம். இதுதான், இந்த வெகு சாதாரணத் தளத்தின் பின்புலம்.
இருந்தாலும்… இந்தக் குறைந்த எண்ணிக்கை வாசகர்களிலும் கூட, பலர் இந்தப் பதிவுகளைப் படித்துக் கோபப்படுவதற்காகவே இங்கு வருகிறார்களோ என்பது என் தொடர்ந்த சந்தேகம்.

Ross Douthat has written a rant (hat tip to Sriram Naganathan, for the article) – The secrets of Princeton. This is a reaction to the essay that an ex-Princetonian Susan Patton wrote: Advice for the young women of Princeton: the daughters I never had.
I would request all readers of this blog to read the above two articles – as they have a solid bearing and a few valuable insights. Ross’ has more incite than insight, that is – but in the name of preservation of perverse diversity and promotion of Armed Chair Intellectualism, I would give Ross his due too, though I want him to get his just desserts.
My own warped opinion follows: The articles are an interesting read. They confirm my suspicions. Susan Patton’s essay is cool, honest & genuine.
I believe in meritocracy, elitism and all those politically incorrect & inconvenient terminologies – and of course in the basic ideas of that dismal science – Economics. Read the rest of this entry »
