1. பணம்: முதலில், நம் வாழ்வின் அடிப்படைத் தேவைகளின் ஒன்றான ‘பணம்’ என்பதைப் பற்றி, சிறிது தர்க்கரீதியாக, ஆழமாகப் பார்க்கலாம். ஏனெனில், இவ்விஷயத்தில் சமனநிலைக்கு வருவது நம் எல்லோருக்கும் முக்கியம்தான்.
உங்களுக்கு – தினந்தோறும் குடும்பத்தைப் பேணுவதும், தினசரி வாழ்க்கையை எதிர்கொள்வதுமே பிரச்சினைகளாக இருக்கலாம் என்பது எனக்கு ஓரளவுக்குப் புரிகிறது. ஆம் – நான் இக்கடிதத்தில், கீழே குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கும் பல விஷயங்களுக்கு, ஓரளவுக்குப் பணம் தேவைதான். ஆனால் அபரிமிதமான அளவுக்குத் தேவையல்ல – ஏனெனில், பெரும்பாலும் உங்கள் குழந்தைகள் பொறுத்த உங்கள் கரிசனத்தை, அன்பை, அரவணைப்பைக் காட்ட – உங்களுடைய நேரத்தை அவர்களுக்காகவும் ஒதுக்குவதே போதுமானது.
இருந்தாலும் இதை நான் குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொல்லவேண்டியிருக்கிறது. கீழ்கண்டவற்றை – உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை நோக்கிய என் புரிதலின் மீது கட்டமைத்திருக்கிறேன் என்பதையும் – தவறுகள் இருப்பின், அவற்றைத் திருத்திக்கொள்ளத் தயாராகவே இருக்கிறேன் என்பதையும் உங்களுக்குக் தெரிவிக்கிறேன்.

நானும், ஒரு பத்து நிமிடம் பார்த்துவிட்டு, என்ன சொல்லியும் குழப்பம் அடங்காததால், கூட்டம் முடிந்து விட்டது என்று சொல்லி, அறையை விட்டு அலுப்புடன் வெளியேறி விட்டேன். ஏறத்தாழ இம்மாதிரி, ஒருமுறையல்ல – இருமுறை நடந்தது, உங்களுக்கு நினைவிருக்கிறதா? முதலில் எனக்கு இவற்றையெல்லாம் பார்த்து-கேட்டு மிகமிகக் கோபம் வந்தாலும் உங்கள் ஒருவரையும் துளிக்கூட அவமரியாதையாகப் பேசவில்லை என்பதையும் நீங்கள் நினைவில் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
உண்மை இப்படி இருக்கையில், உங்களில் சிலர், இம்மாதிரி கூட்டங்களை நான் ஏன் கூட்டுவதில்லை என முறையீடு செய்வது திகைப்பாகவே இருக்கிறது. வெட்டிக் கேளிக்கைகளுக்குத் தான் திரைப்படங்கள் இருக்கின்றனவே!
பலவருடங்களாக, தேவைமெனக்கெட்டு நம் சமூகத்துடன் ஊடாடி வரும் எனக்கு, நம் தமிழ்ச் சமூகத்தை நினைத்து எப்போதுமே ஆச்சரியம் கலந்த வருத்தம்தான். வெறுப்பு இல்லை – ஏனெனில் எனது குவியம் என்பது பெரும்பாலும் உங்கள் குழந்தைகள் மீதுதான். மேலும் நாமெல்லாரும் காலாகாலத்தில் போய்ச் சேரவேண்டியவர்கள் – ஆனால், நம் குழந்தைகள் அப்படியல்லர்; அவர்களுடைய எதிர்காலம் அவர்களுக்காக ஒளிர்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது.

2013 மார்ச் திங்கள் எட்டாம் தேதி! நினைவிருக்கிறதா?
… வரும் மார்ச் எட்டாம்தேதி – தமிழக மாணவக் குஞ்சாமணிகளின் யுகப்புரட்சி வெடித்துக் கிளம்பிய தினத்தின் இரண்டாம் ஆண்டு கருமாந்திர திவசம்! இதற்கு இன்னும் சரியாக ஒருமாதம்தான் இருக்கிறது!
இது – தினவெடுத்த மாணவமணிகள், தங்கள் தமிழீழக் கனவுகளைக் கைமுஷ்டிகளின் ஏந்தி குவலயபீடங்கள் போல ஆர்ப்பரித்துக் கிளம்பிய தினம்!!
தமிழக மாணவமறவர்கள், ஈழத்தைக் காப்பதற்காக ஒருவேளை மட்டும் சாப்பிடாமல் ஷாமியானாக்களில் வாடி வதங்கிய தினங்கள்!!!
நானும் ஒரு ‘அக்கால’ தகவல்தொழில் நுட்ப வேலையாள் எனும் பின்புலத்தில் – மேற்கண்ட நான்கு பிரிவுகளிலும் இல்லாத ஐந்தாம் வர்ணத்தினரையும் அறிவேன். ப்ர்ஹ்மத்துக்கு, ப்ரபஞ்சத்துக்கு நன்றி.
இந்தப் பஞ்சமர்கள்தாம் ஐடி, இன்ஃபொர்மேஷன் டெக்னாலஜி கணினியியல் எனப் பலவாறு அழைக்கப்படும், ஆனால் தொடர்புள்ள துறைகளின் ஆதார சுருதிகள் – தொழில் நுட்ப நுண்மான் நுழைபுலம் காணல், தொடர்ந்து மகிழ்வுடன் மேம்படுத்திக்கொள்ளப்படும் அறிவுப்புலம், அயரா உழைப்பு, நேர்மை, மகத்தான குடிமை உணர்ச்சி, போற்றுதற்குரிய பொறுப்புணர்ச்சி, தொழில்தர்மம், விசாலமான பார்வை, விமர்சனங்கள் தாங்குதிறன், நேரமேலாண்மை, திட்டமிடுதல், தவறுகளைத் தொடர்ந்து திருத்திக் கொண்டுமேலெழும்புதல், தயாளகுணம், மற்ற துறைகளிலும் மேன்மையைப் பேணல், சுறுசுறுப்பு போன்றவை சார்ந்த பலகூறுகளில் ஜொலிப்பவர்கள்; என் கணிப்பில், மொத்த ஐடி வேலையாட்களில், இவர்கள் அதிக பட்சம், 5-8% இருந்தால் அதுவே மிகமிக அதிகம்.
இவற்றைச் சொல்வதில் எனக்குச் சந்தேகமோ தயக்கமோ இல்லவேயில்லை, மாறாக, பெருமை மட்டுமே! ஆம், இவர்களால்தான், இவர்களால் மட்டுமேதான் வண்டி ஓடுகிறது; காலாண்டுக்குக் காலாண்டு வளர்ச்சியில் வருமானம் தொடர்ந்து மேலெழும்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இவர்கள் சராசரித்தனத்தால் பீடிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் குளுவான்கள் அல்லர்.

Very many years ago, we had a meeting (the participants were mainly teachers, parents and teacher-parents) at our earlier (Bangalore) school and the following is a set of notes / discussion pointers that we used to kindle thoughts, seed discussions and to thrash out various vexatious issues and stuff…
The whole context for the meeting was circumscribed by the idea that – parents and schools are NOT on the opposite sides of the child, pulling the poor child literally apart; that these two stakeholders are on the SAME side as that of the child, helping and assisting it to realize its potential to the fullest extent possible.

Anyway, I thought it would perhaps be a good idea, to share the quick notes (from our archives) — that we made for ourselves, when we went for this meeting/discussions — with the readers of this weblog.

‘education’ – big picture vs details

…Or, a bird’s eye view VS earthworm’s view, if you will; this post is part of the infamous ‘education’ series at this blogsite. This is an unfairly long essay – so, feel free to runaway, NOW! :-)

In my earlier avatars I have been part of the surreal corporate world, and I have met with quite a few folks there, who proudly uttered pearls of wisdom such as, they are the “big picture people, ya know” – accompanied by a swagger and those irritating & condescending ‘air quotation’ marks made with their index fingers.
Invariably, they were bosses and/or pretenders. They never interested me. I never respected them. It is their loss, ahem! ;-) I continue to meet such vainglorious people off and on (yes, it takes one to know one). I tell myself that we do require diversity, don’t we? Honestly, we require diversity in every field – some species die, some survive, some mutate, some become mutant monsters, some are well meaning, some are not, some are for positive actions, some others are for mere reactions…
… In any case, any kind of diversity results in that, much-required colourfulness, in an otherwise staid world. Like in the corporate world, how I would have loved to have something else instead of the drab grey, dull coloured shirts and trousers and drabber black suits and cleanshaven faces and powerpoint slidesets…
we expect way too much from teachers…

… and also from schools, and very little from us. Of course there are a few exceptions, as I would mention always, but then…
I think, we as parents (mostly clueless, that is – it takes one to know one and all that…) have these romantic notions of an ideal school being populated by ideal teachers and ideal peers for our children – and keep looking for it. And, when we can’t locate one (obviously, what do we expect!) we keep complaining ad nauseam about the state of affairs…
We are not satisfied at all with the situation, and spread the happy news of our disaffection, discontent and cynicism all over the place – and for some unfathomable reason, the inherent spreadability of any negative news defies ALL physics that I know of – it spreads so fast, in spite of not having much of truth, and absolutely inertia-free!
We expect to find bleakness and negative situations, and voilà, we find them in mind boggling abundance! Read the rest of this entry »
‘education’ – this, i believe…

And so it was.
A few weeks back, yours truly got a chance to ‘formally’ discuss with a group of young, impressionable & wannabe teachers – from many countries including mine and backgrounds – but mostly from South and Meso Americas – about my (current & random) views on this beastess called education – and as I had made the following rough notes for another occasion, I chose to make use of the same and ranted (the text below was given as a handout to them post the talk, because they wanted to get the real drift of the discussions, poor things).
So, I held forth, pontificating ad nauseam – based on my experience and approaches, bestowing my infinite wisdom on these hapless folks. Yes, before you rush headlong to trash me, I know – it is not that I am great teacher or even a reasonable teacher, mind you; and, you must remember that old saw about the ’empty vessels…’, yeah?
However, I also do believe in dialogue – and soon there was this multilogue – not exactly a balanced flow – but pandemonious rapids of information and opinions flowing in from all directions. The discussion was to have been for one hour, but it went on for 3 hours (thanks to the enthusiasm of the youth) over three cups of steaming black coffee.
Anyway… It is always so damn nice to see dedicated and work-ethic infected youth. Them with their dreams and aspirations to make the world a better place. Their wide-eyed wonder and spirited enthu for life, the hope. Their leftist leanings and Che Guevara Tee-shirts. Their takes on Western and Indic philosophies, the yoga of learning. Their ideas of literature (especially the illiterature of the likes of Arundhati Roys) and how bad the ‘education’ scene is, back in their own nations… Their sense of youthful humour, chiseled bodies… It is so damn nice to listen to clueful, knowledgeable and articulate youth full of positive energy – with their brains in full-crunch / alert mode.
I wish them and the future, all the very best that the mothership earth has to offer. (and wish the same to sanctimonious me too!)

I have checked with a few folks and they also have experienced and continue to experience these…
… Sometimes it is a piece of music that keeps repeating itself in the head – such as a 7th Symphony of Beethoven or a Toccata (in C minor) of Bach or a Bhimsen Joshi rendition of Ahir Bhairav or a MS Subbulakshmi’s ‘kurai onrum illai, Govinda’ – I have no wants, Govinda.

You may ask: why single out our dear, hard(ly)-working & poor naxalbari brethren, aren’t they merely nonsensically mouthing those mantras which CPI and CPM folks had uttered earlier?
But, the latter parties have stopped uttering such inanities long long back, haven’t they? Only the wayward bullet-party loving Maoists are still continuing with this, yeah?
… In my *real* youth (=wasted days of my past!), I used a Tamil equivalent (which went something like: paaraalumandram panrigalin thozhuvam = பாராளுமன்றம் பன்றிகளின் தொழுவம்!) just like many other ignorant and arrogant comrades, rather mindlessly – as all I could see of our illustrious parliament members was a distilled personification of corruption and decadence… Of course, I was mighty ignorant too, I must confess. புத்தகாயண சூத்திரம்(*) – பாகம் 1
… சுமார் ஐந்து வயதிலிருந்து பலவகையான புத்தகங்களைத் தொடர்ந்து படித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தாலும், சுமார் 35 வருடங்களாகத்தான் நான் புத்தகங்களை சொந்தப் பைசாவைக் கொடுத்து வாங்கிப் படித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்.
மேலும், பல நூலகங்களிலிருந்தும் கடன்வாங்கிப் பல அழகான புத்தகங்களைப் படித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன் – முக்கியமாக சென்னையில் இன்றும் உள்ள, பழவந்தாங்கல் வட்டார, இந்தியத் தொழில்நுட்பக் கழக, சென்னை மாவட்ட மத்திய (=தேவனேயப் பாவாணர்), கன்னிமரா, சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழக, ஏலூர் (பெங்களூர்+சென்னை) போன்ற நூலகங்களுக்கு நான் மிகவும் கடமைப் பட்டிருக்கிறேன்.
இதைத் தவிர பல ஊர்களின் பல பழைய புத்தகக் கடைகளிலும் – பெங்களூர், லக்னோ, கொல்கொத்தா, தில்லி, நாக்பூர் என, சில பிற நாடுகளிலும் – மயிலாப்பூர் தேசத்தின் பிரசித்தி பெற்ற ஆழ்வார் கடை உட்பட — எண்ணற்ற மணி நேரங்களை முதலீடு செய்திருக்கிறேன்.
… பலவிதமான அற்புத அனுபவங்களில், அண்டவெளிகளில் இப்புத்தகப் பக்கங்களினூடே சஞ்சரித்திருக்கிறேன். கனவா நனவா எனத் தெரியாத எண்ணப் பரப்புகளில் நீந்தியிருக்கிறேன். இத்தனைக்கும் தமிழிலும் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் மட்டுமேதான் என்னுடைய பெரும்பாலான படிப்புகள்/புரிதல்கள். மற்றமொழிகளில், நான் ஒரு நிரக்ஷரகுக்ஷிதான். :-(
இத்தனைக்கும், என்னுடைய தற்கால நிலைமையான – ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதத்தை, க்ரேக்கத்தை எழுத்துகூட்டி வாசித்துப் புரிந்துகொள்வதிலிருந்து, புரிந்து கொள்வதிலிருந்து நான் வெகுவாக முன்னேறியிருக்கவேண்டும். ஆனால் செய்யவில்லை – இதற்கான பல காரணங்களில் ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம், மரியாதைக்குரிய ஆசான்கள்/குருக்கள் கிடைப்பது (கிடைத்தாலும்கூட அவர்களைக் கண்டுகொண்டு காலடியில் படிப்பது) எனக்கு அரிதாகிவிட்டிருக்கிறது; இந்த நிலைமையின் முக்கிய காரணங்களில், என் அகங்காரம் வகிக்கும் பங்கு அதிகம். ஆனாலும், குருவே வேண்டாமென்றாலும்கூட, இன்னொரு முக்கியமான முட்டுச் சந்துக் காரணம் – என்னுடைய நேர மேலாண்மையின்மை. (பாருங்கள், இப்படியே எழுதிக் கொண்டிருப்பதற்கு பதிலாக, நான் விழையும் மற்றகாரியங்களின் மேல் கவனம் கொள்ளலாம் அல்லவா? வலைப் பதிவெழுதும் ஆர்வத்தையும் மீறி அதனைக் கடைந்தேறி மேலே செல்லவேண்டும் அல்லவா??) … வழக்கமாக இந்த ஒத்திசைவானது, புளகாங்கிதத்துடன் சிலந்தியோட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு அசுவாரசியமான அக்கப்போர் மூளைக்குடைச்சல் வலைதளம்தான்; ஆனால் எப்போதாவது பத்ரி சேஷாத்ரி, ஜெயமோகன் போன்றவர்கள் தேவைமெனெக்கெட்டு சுட்டியைப் பரிந்துரைத்தால், ஆயிரத்துக்குப் பக்கத்தில் பக்கப் பார்வைகள் கூடி விடும். ஆக – அடுத்த நாள் என்னுடைய சாலைப் பயணங்களில், என் அருகில் வரும் ஆட்டோக்களை கொஞ்சம் சந்தேகத்துடன் பார்க்கவேண்டியிருக்கும்; என் புடம் போடப்பட்ட அனுபவங்கள் ஆட்டோமெடிக்காக இப்படிச் செய்யவைக்கும். :-)
இதிலிருந்து நான் தெரிந்துகொண்டது: சில ஆயிரம் தமிழ் படிக்கத் தெரிந்த (அல்லது தமிழ்ச்சுட்டிகளின் மேல் க்ளிக் செய்யக்கூடியவர்கள்) அனாமதேய நபர்கள், காலையில் பல்தேய்த்த பின் (வாய்கூடக் கொப்பளிக்காமல்) முதலில் ஆஜர் கொடுப்பது இந்தத் தளங்களில்தான் என்பது. இந்த ஆயிரம் பேர்களும் நிச்சயம், வீட்டுவேலைகளில் மனைவிக்கு உதவாத, உதவாக்கரை ஆண்களாகத் தான் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதும் என் துணிபு. (அல்லது) டக்ளஸ் ஹோஃப்ஸ்டேட்டர்: கெடல், எஷர், பாஹ்: ஒரு முடிவற்ற தங்கப் பின்னல்
1977லேயே வெளிவந்திருந்தாலும், இதனை நான் முதலில் படித்தது 1982ல்தான் என நினைவு. என்னுடைய கல்லூரி நூலகத்தில் மேய்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது அகஸ்மாத்தாகக் கிடைத்த பொக்கிஷம்; உலகமே அற்புதமாகிவிட்டது எனக்கு! 5 நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்து உட்கார்ந்து, நோட்டுப்புத்தகத்தில் குறிப்பெடுத்துக்கொண்டு படித்து முடித்தேன். படிக்கப் படிக்க பிரமிப்பு. இப்படியெல்லாம் கூட புத்தகங்களை எழுதமுடியுமா என்று. படித்து விட்டு சுமார் மூன்று நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்து சொக்கிப்போய் இதனைப் பற்றியேதான் பேச்சு, மூச்சு எல்லாம். எதிர்ப்பட்டவர்களிடமெல்லாம் – இரண்டு பாவப்பட்ட பேராசிரியர்கள் உட்பட – ஒரேயடியாக அதன் புகழ்தான்! அந்தக் காலத்தில், கல்லூரி விடுதியில் என் மாடியில் இருந்த என் சகமாணவர்கள் என்னைப் பார்த்தாலே பின்னங்கால் பிடறியில் பட ஓட ஆரம்பித்து விடுவார்கள் – பாவம். :-)
இந்த கிறங்கல் கலைந்து சமன நிலைக்கு வர, எனக்குக் கொஞ்ச நாட்களாகியது. ஐந்து முறைக்கும் மேலாக இந்த நூலகக்கடன் புத்தகத்தை துணைநூலகருடன் சண்டைபோட்டு நீட்டிப்பு செய்து (ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் 14 நாட்கள்) – கடைசியில் வேறு வழியேயில்லாமல், திருப்தியேயில்லாமல், வேண்டாவெறுப்பாகத் திருப்பிக் கொடுத்தேன். I pretend to ‘do’ mainly science with our ‘earth children’ – but I also drift off in various directions, to do history, geography, angrezi (hic), math and stuff. Heck, I even pretend to be a choir conductor. Don’t get me wrong, there are quite a few other adults (who actually are more able & capable than yours truly) in the picture too, so there is no need to ring the alarm bells… The truth is that, they are all busy working, whereas I am busy posting blog entries! இவற்றை எழுதும்போதே, ஏனடா இந்த தனிப்பட்ட முறை எழவுகளையெல்லாம் சபைக்குக் கொண்டுசெல்லவேண்டும் எனத் தோன்றிக் கொண்டேயிருந்தது. இருந்தாலும், ஒரு முழுமைக்காகவும், தமிழகத்தில் ஒரு தரமான நிறுவனத்தை (அரசிடம் ஒரு சுக்கு உதவியையும் எதிர்பார்க்காமல், பலன்பெறும் சமூகத்தின் முட்டுக்கட்டைகளை மட்டும் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு – ஆகவே எதிர்நீச்சல் மட்டுமே போட்டு) நடத்த வேண்டுமென்றால், எதிர்கொள்ளப் படவேண்டிய சகதிகளில் சிலவற்றைப் பற்றி சில கருத்துகளை, என்னுடைய பார்வையில் வெளிப்படுத்தவும் மட்டுமே இந்த தவணைப் பதிவும். இனிமேல், இம்மாதிரி பிலாக்கணம் வைக்கமாட்டேன். பயப்பட வேண்டாம்.

ஹ்ம்ம்…
ஒரு வழியாக, இந்த 2013-14 கல்வி வருடமும் சுமார் இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்குமுன் முடிந்தது. அயர்வாகத்தான் இருக்கிறது. இனி நான்கு வாரங்கள், எனக்கே எனக்கு எனச் செலவழிக்கவேண்டும்; மீளவேண்டும். ஆரம்ப விழாவாக – மூன்று நாட்கள் விமரிசையாகத் தூங்கினேன். :-)

என் பள்ளியில் பத்தாம் வகுப்புப் பிள்ளைகள் பரீட்சையில் தேர்வடைந்து / கெலித்து விட்டார்கள். சந்தோஷமான செய்திதான்; எப்படியோ வெளியுலகத்திற்குச் சென்று, தேவையான மேற்படிப்பு படித்து, உழைத்துச் சம்பாதித்து, இவர்கள் முன்மாதிரிப் பிரஜைகளாக விளங்கினால் சரி.
… சென்ற ஒரு வருடமாக, இந்தப் பிள்ளைகள் +2 இங்கேயே படிக்கிறோம், தமிழக அரசின் ஹையர் ஸெகன்டரி பரீட்சைகளையும் இன்னொரு இரண்டு வருடம் இந்தப் பள்ளியிலேயே படித்து எழுதுகிறோம் என்றார்கள். மகாமகோ அழுத்தம் கொடுத்தார்கள். எங்களுக்காக மேலதிகமாக இரண்டு வருடம் செலவழிக்க முடியாதா எனப் பரிதாபமான, நியாயமான, கோபமான, வருத்தமான கெஞ்சல்கள். அவர்களுக்கு இப்பள்ளியை விட்டுவிட்டு வெளியேறவே ஆசையில்லை. ஆனாலும் – நான் முதலில் இருந்தே அது முடியாது என்றுதான் சொல்லி வந்திருக்கிறேன்.
