Ross Douthat has written a rant (hat tip to Sriram Naganathan, for the article) – The secrets of Princeton. This is a reaction to the essay that an ex-Princetonian Susan Patton wrote: Advice for the young women of Princeton: the daughters I never had.
I would request all readers of this blog to read the above two articles – as they have a solid bearing and a few valuable insights. Ross’ has more incite than insight, that is – but in the name of preservation of perverse diversity and promotion of Armed Chair Intellectualism, I would give Ross his due too, though I want him to get his just desserts.
My own warped opinion follows: The articles are an interesting read. They confirm my suspicions. Susan Patton’s essay is cool, honest & genuine.
I believe in meritocracy, elitism and all those politically incorrect & inconvenient terminologies – and of course in the basic ideas of that dismal science – Economics. Read the rest of this entry »

In a world that abounds in fake-science, fake-technology, fake-religion, fake-activism and fake-atheism – and various other singletonian views of The Universe – I feel that these kinds of discussions are important to get our bearings right…
Robert Geraci is the Author of ‘Apocalyptic AI: Visions of Heaven in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Reality‘ a 2010 book that I liked a lot for its integrity – and for its deep knowledge of the semantics of technology and of religion. I strongly recommend this book too!

a lesson in history…

… … or in sex education (oh no!), if you will…
I have the shared the following story many times over in the past, with groups of school-going children, fellow ‘teachers’ and sometimes in the random corporate ‘training’ sessions that I have conducted – all lost in the swirling mists of the past.
Ah, the memories, sweet dreams are of course made of these!
Anyway, over to the story.

Many years ago – two children, siblings actually – one a 8 year old, the other 6 years of age were living in a distant suburb of Chennai – this suburb was quite close to the Meenambakkam Airport – and was more like a sparsely populated village in those days.

இரண்டு வருடம் முன்னால் ஒரு வெள்ளைக்காரர் (அவர் பெயர் மறந்து விட்டது) நம் தமிழை எழுதப் படிக்கக் கற்றுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என வந்தார். யாரையோ கேட்டிருக்கிறார் யாராவது அவருக்கு உதவி செய்ய முடியுமா என்று – முன்னால் இம்மாதிரி ‘தமிழ் ஆபத்துதவிப் படை’ வேலைகள் செய்திருந்ததால், அவர்கள் என்னைப் போய் தமிழ் ஐயா என்று காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். ஆக, அவருக்கு நான் ஒரு தமிழ் ஐயோ என்று தெரியாத காரணத்தால், பாவம், வசமாக மாட்டிக் கொண்டார்.

நான் எப்பொழுதுமே ஒரு பாக்கியசாலியாகத்தான் இருந்திருக்கிறேன், தொடர்ந்தும் அப்படியேதான் இருப்பேன். எனக்குக் கிடைத்த (தொடர்ந்து கிடைக்கும்) அருமையான அனுபவங்கள், நிகழ்வுகள், நட்புக்கள் – எனக்கு அவைகளைப் பெறுவதற்கும் அடைவதற்கும் அருகதை இருந்ததோ இல்லையோ, இருக்கிறதோ இல்லையோ – அவை அழகானவை, வாழ்வுக்குச் செறிவூட்டுபவை; நுட்பமும், ஆழமும், வீச்சும் மிக்கவை. அசை போட அசை போட, போதையும், சில சமயம் மாளா துக்கமும் தருபவை…

ஷங்கர்தா ((1943 – 91) என எங்களில் சிலரால் வாஞ்சையுடன் அழைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு மகத்தான மனிதநேயவாதி கொலை செய்யப்பட்டு 22 ஆண்டுகள் உருண்டோடி விட்டன. இன்று உயிருடன் அவர் இருந்திருந்தால் அவருக்கு 70 வயதாகியிருக்கும். ஃபெப்ரவரி 14 பிறந்தவர் அவர்.
ஹ்ம்ம்? அவர் உயிருடன் இருந்திருந்தாலாவா??

நாம் ஒரு கோளத்தை (sphere) ஒரு கனசதுரத்துக்குள் (cube), முன்னதை நசுக்காமல், பின்னதைப் பிதுக்காமல் – அடைக்கிறோம் என்று நினைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். அதாவது ஒரு டென்னிஸ் பந்தை, அதற்கென்றே வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு சதுர டப்பியில் (டப்பாவின் பெண்பால்) வைக்கிறோம் எனவும் நினைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம்.
இப்போது, கிட்டத்தட்ட அந்தக் கோளத்தின் விட்டம் = டப்பியின் ஒரு ஓரத்தின் நீளம்தானே?
மேலும், விகிதாச்சாரமாக (proportion) இதனைப் பார்க்கும்போது, அந்தக் கோளத்தின் கொள்ளளவு, அது இருக்கும் டப்பியின் கொள்ளளவில் மிகப்பெரிய பகுதியாகத்தானே இருக்க வேண்டும், அல்லவா?
ஃப்பூ! இதென்ன பெரிய விஷயம் என்கிறீர்களா? என்ன கிழவா சொல்ல வருகிறாய் என்று கேட்பீர்கள் கூட! இருங்கள்…

எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த காமிக் – கால்வின் அண்ட் ஹாப்ஸ் (Calvin and Hobbes). சமூக விமர்சனம் என்கிற போர்வையில் ஆனால், பல தளங்களில் சஞ்சரித்த, சஞ்சரிக்கும் மகத்தான இலக்கியம் – பில் வாட்டர்ஸன் (Bill Watterson) என்கிற கலைஞன் (டாக்டர் அல்ல) வாழ்க்கையைக் குழைத்து அழகாகச் செதுக்கி நமக்கு அளித்தது… (இதெல்லாம் நம் தமிழில் வெளிவர முடிந்தால் எவ்வளவு நன்றாக இருக்கும்!)
டிஸெம்பர் 31, 1989-ல் வெளிவந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை பெரிய கார்ட்டூன் இது. வசதிக்காக பிய்த்துப் பிய்த்துக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறேன். தமிழ்ப் படுத்தியும் இருக்கிறேன்.

கடந்த பத்து நாட்களாக நான் பணி புரியும் பள்ளிகளில் கிறிஸ்த்மஸ்-புதுவருடப்பிறப்பு விடுமுறைக்கு முன்னால் முடிக்க வேண்டிய வேலைகள் ஏராளமாகக் குவிந்திருந்தன. ஒருவழியாக இன்று மாலை அவற்றை முடித்தேன். அலுப்போதி அலுப்பு.
ஆனால், திடீரென்று மாலையில், மனைவிக்கும் (=துணைவிக்கும்) எனக்கும் அழைப்பு.
ஆக, கலாபினி அவர்களின் ஒரு இரண்டு மணிநேர மெஹ்ஃபில் போகும் வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்தது இன்று. எங்களையும் கலைஞர்களையும் சேர்த்து 20-30 பேர் கச்சேரியில் இருந்திருந்ததால் அதுவே அதிகம் சஞ்சய் தேஷ்பாண்டே அவர்களின் தப்லா. விரல்களாடும் நாட்டியம்.

எப்பொழுதெல்லாம், நம் பாரம்பரியப் புல் வகைகளைப் பற்றி அவை அரிசி போன்ற பெருதானியங்களாக இருந்தாலும் சரி, சிறுதானியங்களானாலும் சரி, மற்றபடி தீவனப் புல், மூங்கில் வகைகளானாலும் சரி – எந்த ஒரு சந்தேகம் வந்தாலும் (அவை, நிறையவே வருபவைதான்!) அதை நிவர்த்தி செய்து கொள்ள, தற்காலத்தில் நான் அணுகுவது இந்த புத்தகத்தைத்தான்.

சில நாட்கள் முன்பு ஒரு நெடுநாள் நண்பனொருவன் வந்திருந்தான். சில பழைய விஷயங்கள் பற்றியும், என் பள்ளியில் நாங்கள் அமைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு புத்தம்புதிய கணினித் தொழில் நுட்ப மையம் சார்ந்து சில திட்டங்களைப் பற்றியும், எப்படி அதற்குத் தேவையான மூலதனம் கொணர்வது, நிர்வகிப்பது என்பதையும் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தோம். பேச்சு ஆர்ட்வீனொ (arduino) எனும் அழகைப் பற்றி இயற்கையாகத் திரும்பியது – நான் அதனை வைத்து என் மாணவர்களுடன் உரையாட, பயிற்சி கொடுக்க முனைந்து கொண்டிருப்பதால், திட்டமிடுவதால்.
அவன் கேட்டான், ”எனக்கு சில நல்ல ரொபாடிக்ஸ் மேல் காதல் கொண்ட, மின்னணுவியலிலும், கணினியியலிலும் பயிற்சி பெற்ற இளைஞர்களைக் காண்பிக்க முடியுமா? சில திட்டங்கள் வைத்திருக்கிறேன் – பெங்களூரில்? சென்னையில்? புணேயில்? உனக்கு யாரையாவது தெரியுமா?”
நான் சொன்னேன், “நிச்சயம் தெரியும், ஆனால், எனக்கு இரண்டு வருடங்கள் கொடு, என்னால் பொருட்படுத்தத்தக்க அளவு உழைக்க முடிந்தால், எங்கள் கிராமத்துப் பக்கத்திலிருந்து வெறும் பத்தாவது மட்டுமே படித்த, ஆனால் ஞானமும், ஆர்வமும், குடிமை உணர்ச்சியும், விடாமுயற்சியும், சுறுசுறுப்பும் மிக்க, சில சுட்டிப்பையன்களைக் கொடுக்கிறேன், சுட்டிப் பெண்களையும் தான். இந்தப் பொடியன்பொடிச்சிகள், அந்த முட்டாள்-அப்பன்கள் செலவில் மெத்தப் படித்த அந்த அரைகுறை பி.ஈ, பி.டெக் களை விட நல்ல பொறியாளர்களாக இருப்பார்கள். அதற்கு நான் உத்திரவாதம், சரியா?” Read the rest of this entry »
