(OR) the story of ‘maan dhonia!’
Oh well.
And so, in one of our trips to the hills, Sonati gave us a nice looking plant whose leaves smelt much like our own Coriander (Kothamalli in Tamil, Coriander sativum, Kannada – Kothambari, Kashmiri – Daaniwal, Malayalam – Kothambalari, Marathi – Dhane, Telegu – Dhaniyalu), but had a very stronger odour and tasted as nicely pungent as any self-respecting Coriander would, that is – till may be a couple of decades back.
… Back to our dear Lady. In the ‘middle’ of cooking, she would suddenly walk out with a purposeful look (but with a knife in hand, so I dared not crack any joke, which was sad) and gait (starting with a quick demi plié), and bring just a couple of raspy leaves from her garden patch and mince them and garnish her tasty preparations; of course, decorated thusly, aha, the dishes would delightfully be fragrant and appetite inducing. … வழக்கமாக இந்த ஒத்திசைவானது, புளகாங்கிதத்துடன் சிலந்தியோட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு அசுவாரசியமான அக்கப்போர் மூளைக்குடைச்சல் வலைதளம்தான்; ஆனால் எப்போதாவது பத்ரி சேஷாத்ரி, ஜெயமோகன் போன்றவர்கள் தேவைமெனெக்கெட்டு சுட்டியைப் பரிந்துரைத்தால், ஆயிரத்துக்குப் பக்கத்தில் பக்கப் பார்வைகள் கூடி விடும். ஆக – அடுத்த நாள் என்னுடைய சாலைப் பயணங்களில், என் அருகில் வரும் ஆட்டோக்களை கொஞ்சம் சந்தேகத்துடன் பார்க்கவேண்டியிருக்கும்; என் புடம் போடப்பட்ட அனுபவங்கள் ஆட்டோமெடிக்காக இப்படிச் செய்யவைக்கும். :-)
இதிலிருந்து நான் தெரிந்துகொண்டது: சில ஆயிரம் தமிழ் படிக்கத் தெரிந்த (அல்லது தமிழ்ச்சுட்டிகளின் மேல் க்ளிக் செய்யக்கூடியவர்கள்) அனாமதேய நபர்கள், காலையில் பல்தேய்த்த பின் (வாய்கூடக் கொப்பளிக்காமல்) முதலில் ஆஜர் கொடுப்பது இந்தத் தளங்களில்தான் என்பது. இந்த ஆயிரம் பேர்களும் நிச்சயம், வீட்டுவேலைகளில் மனைவிக்கு உதவாத, உதவாக்கரை ஆண்களாகத் தான் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதும் என் துணிபு. 2009 மே மாதம். அச்சமயம் நான், என் குடும்பத்தினருடன் எங்களுடைய நெடுநாள் குடும்ப நண்பன் ஒருவனுடைய வீட்டில் தங்கியிருந்தேன் – இந்த வீடு சேலம் மாவட்டத்தின் மலைப் பிராந்தியங்கள் ஒன்றில் ஒரு குக்கோதிகுக் கிராமத்தில் இருக்கிறது. நண்பனின் அடுத்தவீட்டுக்காரர் சுமார் ஒரு கிமீ தள்ளி. ஆக – அழகும் அமைதியும் உள்ள பிரதேசம். இரவுகளில் மகாமகோ கும்மிருட்டு. நமக்கே கேட்கும் நம் இதயத்தின் துடிப்பு. கொசுவே இல்லை. இனிது இனிது ஏகாந்தமினிதுதான்… (1999 வாக்கில் இவன் அப்பகுதியில் குடியேறினாலும், 2007ல் தான் இவன் வீட்டிற்கு மின்சார இணைப்பே கிடைத்தது என நினைவு)
… விடிகாலையில் ஆரம்பிக்கும் பேச்சு. காலைக்குளிரில் (மேமாதத்திலும் கூட!) அண்மையில் உள்ள சிறு குன்றின்மீது உட்கார்ந்துகொண்டு சூர்யோதயத்துக்காக காத்திருந்து கொண்டு, கட்டங்காப்பி பருகுதல்; பேச்சு; கொஞ்சம் தோட்டவேலை; பேச்சு; பின்புலத்தில் தேர்ந்தேடுத்த ஜாஸ் இசை அல்லது கலாபினி கொம்கலி தரப் பாடகர்கள். விறகு அடுப்பில் எளிமையான ஆனால் மிகச் சுவையான கூட்டுச் சமையல்; துணிதுவைத்தல்; பேச்சு. பாத்திரம் கழுவுதல்; பேச்சு—; பேச்சு. —; பேச்சு… —; பேச்சு… —; பேச்சு… மதியம் சுமார் 3 மணி நேரம் பிடித்த புத்தக வாசிப்பு. மாலையில் நீண்ட நடைபயணம். பின் மறுபடியும் குன்றின் உச்சியிலிருந்து சூர்யாஸ்தமனம் பார்த்தல் (கையில் தேனீர்க் குடுவையுடன்); குளித்துவிட்டு இரவுணவு, சுத்தம் செய்தல். பின்னர் இருகுடும்பத்துக் குழந்தைகளும் போட்டுக்காட்டும் நாடகங்கள், படிக்கும் கவிதைகள், கதைகள் இன்னபிற போன்றவை. ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் இரவில் ஒரு நல்ல படம். ஆக ஒரு அந்த்ரெய் தார்கோவ்ஸ்கி / டெப்ரா க்ரானிக் / குரஸாவா அகிரா / ரிச்சர்ட் லின்க்லேடர் / ரித்விக் கடக் / பால் தாமஸ் ஆன்டர்ஸன் / ஆந்த்ரே வய்தா / இங்க்மர் பெர்ன்மன் படம்… பத்துமணிக்கு மேல் நட்சத்திரங்கள், ஆகாஷகங்கை (பால்வழிப் பாதை) தரிசனம். அன்றைய கேல் கதம். Let me say, I admire this excellent effort at factifuging. However, never mind the facts, if you do a google search, you get copious amounts of random rumours and fearmongering… No real analysis, no understanding at all – all are characterized by a mere store-and-forward procedure!

… தொடர்ச்சி – மூன்றாம் நிகழ்வு:
மற்ற இரண்டு நிகழ்வுகள் பெங்களூரில் நடந்தன. இது அவற்றில் ஒன்று,
1996 என நினைவு – பெங்களூர் கோரமங்களாவில் ஒரு நிறுவனம் – சிறிய, ஆனால் அதி தொழில்நுட்ப முனைவு.
மூன்றாவது மாடியில் அனைவருக்கும், ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் தரமான மதிய உணவு. கைக்குத்தலரிசிச் சோறு. தமிழ் நாட்டுச் சாம்பார் – போன்றவைகளுடன் கூடிய சத்தான உணவு. அற்ப மசாலாக்களும், பூரிக்களும், எண்ணெய் மிதக்கும் பிலாவ் சோறும் கிடையவே கிடையாது. சுமார் 30 பேர்கள் மட்டுமே இருந்ததால் அதுவும் அது ஒரு ஒரு மென்பொருள் வஸ்து (software products) தயாரிக்கும் நிறுவனமாக இருந்ததால், மேலதிகமாக எங்கள் வஸ்துவை, அதன் கருத்துப்பொருளை / கட்டமைப்பு சார்ந்து மட்டுமே நாங்கள் ஏற்கெனவே விற்றுவிட்டிருந்ததால் – எங்களால் ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்தையும் பார்த்துப் பார்த்துச் செவ்வனேசெய்ய முடிந்தது – மதிய உணவு, அலுவலக உள் அலங்கரிப்பு உட்பட. எங்கள் தொடங்கிகள்-குழுவில் இருந்த அனைவரும், மிகுந்த முனைப்புடன் இருந்தோம்… எவ்வளவோ கனவுகள். பல நிறைவேறினவும் கூட.
ஒரு தமிழ் இளைஞன் (ஆர்இஸி பையன்; தூத்துக்குடிக்காரன்) என் குழுவில் இருந்தான். பொதுவாக ஓரளவுக்காவது முன் அனுபவம் இல்லாதவர்களை நான் சேர்த்திக் கொள்ள மாட்டேன். ஆனால், இவனை நண்பர் ஒருவர் பரிந்துரைத்திருந்தார் – ஆக, கொஞ்ச நாட்கள் பார்க்கலாம் என நான் அவனைச் சேர்த்திக் கொண்டேன்; குழுவில் என்னையும் சேர்த்து ஆறு பேர் மட்டுமே, அவன், ஒரு கற்றுக்குட்டியாக. ஆனால் ஒரளவு சூட்டிகையான பையனாகத்தான் தோன்றினான். கொஞ்சம் அளவுக்கு மேலதிகமான தன்னம்பிக்கை இருந்தது, செய்ய எத்தனிப்பதற்கும் செய்கைக்கும் நடுவில் கொஞ்சம் இடைவெளி அதிகம். அதனால் என்ன, அவனுக்கு அது முதல் வேலை, அனுபவங்களைச் சார்ந்து அவன் கற்றுக் கொள்வான் என விட்டு விட்டேன். முந்தைய பதிவு: உணவை வீணடிப்பது பற்றிய சிந்தனைகள்… (நான்கு நிகழ்வுகளினூடே) 03/10/2013
நமது திருமணங்களில், சமூக விருந்துகளில், நமது உணவகங்களில் – இவற்றையெல்லாமே விடுங்கள் — நம் வீடுகளிலேயே, நாம் அநியாயத்துக்கு வீணடிக்கும் உணவைப் பற்றி யோசித்தால் மாளா துக்கமும் கோபமும் தான் வரும். இந்த – சோற்றை வேலை மெனக்கெட்டு வீணடித்தல் எனும் பொதுவிதிக்கு எந்த மதமோ, ஜாதியோ, நாடோ – எனக்குத் தெரிந்தவரை எதிலும் ஒரு விதிவிலக்கு கூட இல்லை. ஒரு பக்கம் மாளாப் பஞ்சம், பற்றாக்குறைகள், பானை வயிறுடன் சூம்பிப் போயிருக்கும் குழந்தைகள். இன்னொரு பக்கம் — ஒரு போதும் சிந்தித்துப் பார்க்கப்படாத, வீணடிப்புகளும் கயமையும் + உணவின் மீதான சுரணையற்ற அவமரியாதையும்.
… தவிர்க்கமுடியாத சில சமயங்களில், நான் சென்றிருக்கும் சொற்ப எண்ணிக்கைத் திருமணங்களில் கூட, நம் மக்கள் செய்யும் இந்த அயோக்கிய வீணடித்தல்களால் என்னை அழைத்தவர்களுக்கு, என்னால், தர்மசங்கடமான பிரச்சினைகள் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கின்றன – நிலைமை சில சமயம் ரசாபாசமாகி, மிகுந்த தொந்திரவு கொடுத்திருக்கிறேன்.
இதற்குப் பயந்து கொண்டும், திருமணச் செலவினங்களை பெண் மட்டும் அல்லது பெண்வீட்டார் மட்டுமே தரும் அயோக்கிய வழிமுறைகள் எனக்கு ஒப்பில்லாத காரணத்தாலும் – சுமார் 20 வருடங்கள் எந்தத் திருமணத்துக்குமே போகாமல் இருந்தேன். ஆனால் கடந்த பத்தாண்டுகளில் மூன்று நான்கு திருமணங்களுக்குச் சென்றிருக்கிறேன்.
அப்படி, வேறுவழியே இல்லாமல் செல்லும்போது, உடலின் அனைத்து ஓட்டைகளையும் மூடிக் கொண்டு ஒரு மூலையில் புத்தகங்களுடன் உட்கார்வதையும் பழக்கமாக வைத்திருக்கிறேன். Read the rest of this entry »

19. சோட்டாபீம் போன்ற அற்ப கேலிச்சித்திர அசிங்க அதிகுண்டக் கோமணர்கள் இல்லாமல், வாழ்க்கையில் வீரத்தையும், விடாமுயற்சியையும் – எப்படித்தான் குழந்தைகள் மனதில் பதிய வைப்பது? கேளிக்கை முறை ஊடக நிகழ்ச்சிகளினால் மட்டும்தானே குழந்தைகளுக்கு இவ்விழுமியங்களைக் காண்பிக்க முடியும்? சேர்ப்பிக்க முடியும்?
ஆம். இது மிக வருந்தத்தக்க, ஆனால் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளக்கூடிய விஷயம்தான்.
வேறு வழியில்லை. பஞ்சதந்திரமும், ஹிதோபதேசமும், இதிஹாசங்களும், புராணங்களும், ஐங்காப்பியங்களும் சொல்லாத, சுட்டாத விஷயங்களை, மிகுந்த நயத்துடன், மிகத் தெளிவாக சோட்டாபீம் அவர்கள் காண்பிக்கிறார்கள். எனக்குப் புல்லரிக்கிறது.
அடிப்படை அறங்களின் ஒரு அங்கமான நேர்மை, தைரியம் போன்ற அடிப்படை விழுமியங்களை, பெற்றோர்களாகிய நம்மால் பல்வேறு அழுத்தங்களால் நம்முடைய குழந்தைகளுக்குப் புகட்டமுடியாமல் போகும்போது, யாராவது தொலைக்காட்சியில் இவற்றைக் காண்பித்தால் என்னைப் போன்ற உலுத்தர்கள், புலம்ப ஆரம்பித்து விடுகிறார்கள்.

10. ஆனால், தொலைக்காட்சியில் நாம் இப்போது பார்க்கும் விஷயங்கள், கண்+செவி கொண்டு நம்மை அடையும் செய்திகள், பிற்காலத்தில் நமக்கு உபயோக கரமாக இருக்கலாமில்லையா? எதிர்காலத்தின் நாம் உபயோகிக்கக்கூடும் நினைவுகள், தற்காலத்திய இந்த்ரியத் துய்த்தல்கள் மூலமாகவே உருவாக்கப் படுகின்றன அல்லவா?
நாம் பார்க்கும் தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகள், நம் நினைவில் எவ்வளவு நாட்கள் இருக்கின்றன, அவற்றிலிருந்து நேரிடையாகவோ மறைமுகமாகவோ எவ்வளவு கற்றுக் கொள்கிறோம், கற்றுக் கொண்டவைகளிலிருந்து நாம் எவ்வளவு சதவிகிதத்தை உபயோகித்து நம்மை உய்வித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம், மகிழ்வித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்றெல்லாம் யோசித்தால் நலம்.

எச்சரிக்கை: இந்தப் பதிவில் 1) ஏன் தொலைக் காட்சி என்பது வெறுக்கப் படவேண்டியதொன்று 2) அதனால் ஒரு சில நன்மைகள் தப்பித் தவறி இருந்தாலும் – உண்மையில் அது எவ்வளவு தீமை செய்கிறது 3) தொலைக்காட்சி முதல்வாத அடிப்படைவாதிகளுக்கு (Television Fundamentalists!), சோம்பேறிப் பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு எதிராக என்றெல்லாம்…
… பிரகடனங்கள் இல்லை. மன்னிக்கவும்.
ஆனால், இவற்றைப் பற்றியெல்லாம் பின்னொரு சமயம் எழுத முயற்சிக்கிறேன். 8-)
மாறாக – என் பார்வையில் – குழந்தைகளுடனான ஒரு குடும்பச் சூழலில், சராசரித் தர (அறிவு, பொருளாதாரம், பார்வை, அனுபவங்கள் இன்னபிற) பெற்றோர்களால் – தங்கள் வீட்டில், தொலைக்காட்சியில்லாமல் என்னதான் செய்யக் கூடும் என்பதை மட்டுமேதான் இப்பதிவில் விவரிக்கப் போகிறேன்; இங்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான விஷயம்: எனக்குத் தெரியும் – நானும் ஒரு சராசரித்தனமான ஆள்தான் – அகஸ்மாத்தாக ஒரு கணவன், தந்தை போன்ற பல பாத்திரங்களில், குணசித்திர வேடங்களில் நடிப்பவன்தான். இன்னும் முக்கியமாக, நான் ஒரு அறிவுஜீவி கிறிவுஜீவியென்றெல்லாம் இல்லை.
ஆகவே, கடந்த சுமார் 30 வருடங்களாகத் தொலைக்காட்சியின் கிட்டவே போகாமல் காலம் தள்ளியிருக்கும் ஒரு சாதாரணன் என்கிற முறையில் மட்டுமே இந்தக் கேள்வி-பதில் நடைப் பதிவு நீளும். யோசித்துப் பார்த்தால், இந்தக் கேள்விகளை எல்லாம், என்னிடம் பலபேர் பல சமயங்களில் கேட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்; விதம் விதமான பதில்களையும் பெற்றிருக்கிறார்கள். இரண்டு நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு கூட, ஒரு நண்பர் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். அவர் மகனை, மேதகு சோட்டாபீம் அவர்களிடமிருந்து மீட்க வேண்டுமாம். ஆக, இந்தப் பதிவு; வழக்கம்போல, யாம் பெற்ற பேறு, பெருக இவ்வையகம் !

the legend of matajuro

One of the most ‘deep’ and clueful stories in the yoga – dhyaana – buddhism – shinto – zen – performing_martial_arts continuum, in my humble opinion, is the story of Yagyu Matajuro.
However, nowhere on the web could one find a good coverage or an even a faithful reproduction of the story. It is in this context that I am reproducing here, the story as retold / written by Dave Lowry (Autumn Lightning – The education of an American Samurai / Shambala / 1985 / isbn 1 57062 115 2) in his eminently readable autobiographical work.
This story is narrated in ‘Autumn Lightning’ in the context of ‘zanshin’ – constant peripheral awareness, concentration and attention at all times – the ‘continuing mind,’ if you will.
And, I have used the story – many a time, in my sessions / training programmes – in significantly useful ways – whether it was for newbie employees / team members or for school going adolescent kids.
I have been fortunate enough to have been privy to very interesting discussions and thought fragments on that beast called ‘work ethic‘ and its cousins ‘unswerving focus‘ & ‘awareness‘ – subsequent to group readings of this legend and improvised theatrical enactments based on it. I used to have a loosely translated Tamil version of this legend fogr distribution to Tamil knowing kids, but I seem to have misplaced it, which is rather sad, but then…

Yes.
In spite of what Douglas Hofstadter has to say about music (on as to why we love it), groups like Pink Floyd seem to have been able to make some good music that is likely to live far beyond that of the bands or their members.

our daily bread (2005) – some reflections

We (at the ErdKinder environment, I mean 12 – 16 year oldsyoungs in our Montessori classroom) get (also) to ‘see’ a lot of films and this ‘Our Daily Bread’ happened to be one of those. And, we had some discussions centred around the film – and, the children had a written ‘test’ to boot a few days later, to collect their thoughts and reflections. More on this, and the content of the ‘question paper’ further down this post…
For anyone who is even remotely concerned with the food (and by extension, our dear life) related issues that our world is facing and especially the mass production and consumption angles – this film is a heart wrenching reminder of the grim situation. The film has little commentary, anyway the moving images speak volumes and volumes – technically also, it is one of the most canonically produced pieces of cinema verite.
