‘The Annotated Alice‘ of Lewis Carrol and Martin Gardner – was (finally) returned a couple of weeks back by my dear Rama and I was fondly leafing through it, before sentimentally returning it to the library shelves. It is currently rubbing shoulders with the books of the likes of  Isaac Asimov, JBS Haldane, Erwin Schrödinger, Enrico Fermi, Paul Dirac, Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer et al and should be feeling happy now; what a work of deep scholarship!

Rest in peace, Martin. You lived to a ripe old age of 96 and also did a great job of living, all the while!

Having thoroughly enjoyed (actually a lame word like ‘enjoyment’ does begin to describe the pure exhilaration one feels studying a Martin Gardner or a Douglas Hofstadter or a Richard Feynman) ‘The Annotated Alice’ among many other works of Martin, I am reminded of that 1910  gem ‘Calculus Made Easy‘ of Silvanus Thompson which was later updated and edited by Martin in 1998. ( I just realized that this classic, a real classic at that, has completed hundred years of its existence!)

(or) USSR (RIP), MIR Publications, and oh yeah – Yakov Isidorovich ‘Y Perelman’: Physics can be Fun! (aka ‘Physics for Entertainment’)

This book published in 1913,  – ‘Physics can be Fun’ – is truly a classic and is still a classic. I recommend it heartily to anyone (and everyone) who is fortunate enough to have a passing knowledge of English – well, that’s how I recommended it to myself in the first place!

In my humble opinion, no home is complete without this book on its bookshelves. Really.

I am of the opinion that, if one really goes through the book, it would be next to impossible NOT to appreciate the wonderful world around us.  Oh the pure  joy! ‘Physics can be fun’ is eminently readable, sprinkled with great insights & cutesy diagrams and is a fantastic work of translation (from the Russian original – or so a little Ruski bird tells me!).

However, I  note that these are the stellar times of the gag reflexes – sometimes even from otherwise well accomplished people! You enthusiastically start talking about some delightful aspect of math or literature or film or science or music or whatever, or even cooking for that matter – and you can literally (and immediately) see the eyes of your acquaintances glazing over, eyeballs bulging  in disbelief, as they sincerely feel that ‘I can’t do / understand it’ all the time.

They tell themselves forever that they are not good at this, not good at that, they are not made to understand these things, I am like this only etc etc and so very happily settle for Aamir Khan films mediocrity! How sad… What a waste of human potential! Read the rest of this entry »

19. சோட்டாபீம்  போன்ற அற்ப கேலிச்சித்திர அசிங்க அதிகுண்டக் கோமணர்கள் இல்லாமல், வாழ்க்கையில் வீரத்தையும், விடாமுயற்சியையும் – எப்படித்தான் குழந்தைகள் மனதில் பதிய வைப்பது? கேளிக்கை முறை ஊடக நிகழ்ச்சிகளினால் மட்டும்தானே குழந்தைகளுக்கு இவ்விழுமியங்களைக் காண்பிக்க முடியும்? சேர்ப்பிக்க முடியும்?

ஆம். இது மிக வருந்தத்தக்க, ஆனால் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளக்கூடிய விஷயம்தான்.

வேறு வழியில்லை. பஞ்சதந்திரமும், ஹிதோபதேசமும், இதிஹாசங்களும், புராணங்களும், ஐங்காப்பியங்களும் சொல்லாத, சுட்டாத விஷயங்களை, மிகுந்த நயத்துடன், மிகத் தெளிவாக சோட்டாபீம் அவர்கள் காண்பிக்கிறார்கள். எனக்குப் புல்லரிக்கிறது.

அடிப்படை அறங்களின் ஒரு அங்கமான நேர்மை, தைரியம் போன்ற அடிப்படை விழுமியங்களை, பெற்றோர்களாகிய நம்மால் பல்வேறு அழுத்தங்களால் நம்முடைய குழந்தைகளுக்குப்  புகட்டமுடியாமல் போகும்போது, யாராவது தொலைக்காட்சியில் இவற்றைக் காண்பித்தால் என்னைப் போன்ற உலுத்தர்கள், புலம்ப ஆரம்பித்து விடுகிறார்கள்.

இந்தச் சனியன்களுக்கு வேறு வேலையில்லை. மேலும் உங்களுடைய குழந்தைகள், சோட்டாபீம் படம் வரைந்த மேல்சட்டைகளை அணிந்து கொண்டு உங்களைப் பார்த்துச் சிரிக்கும்போது, உங்கள் இதயம் உருகிவிடாதா? Read the rest of this entry »

10. ஆனால், தொலைக்காட்சியில் நாம் இப்போது பார்க்கும் விஷயங்கள், கண்+செவி கொண்டு நம்மை அடையும் செய்திகள், பிற்காலத்தில் நமக்கு உபயோக கரமாக இருக்கலாமில்லையா? எதிர்காலத்தின் நாம் உபயோகிக்கக்கூடும் நினைவுகள், தற்காலத்திய இந்த்ரியத் துய்த்தல்கள் மூலமாகவே உருவாக்கப் படுகின்றன அல்லவா?

நாம் பார்க்கும் தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகள், நம் நினைவில் எவ்வளவு நாட்கள் இருக்கின்றன, அவற்றிலிருந்து நேரிடையாகவோ மறைமுகமாகவோ எவ்வளவு கற்றுக் கொள்கிறோம், கற்றுக் கொண்டவைகளிலிருந்து நாம் எவ்வளவு சதவிகிதத்தை உபயோகித்து நம்மை உய்வித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம், மகிழ்வித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்றெல்லாம் யோசித்தால் நலம்.

எச்சரிக்கை: இந்தப் பதிவில் 1) ஏன் தொலைக் காட்சி என்பது வெறுக்கப் படவேண்டியதொன்று 2) அதனால் ஒரு சில நன்மைகள் தப்பித் தவறி இருந்தாலும் – உண்மையில் அது எவ்வளவு தீமை செய்கிறது 3) தொலைக்காட்சி முதல்வாத அடிப்படைவாதிகளுக்கு (Television Fundamentalists!), சோம்பேறிப் பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு எதிராக  என்றெல்லாம்…

… பிரகடனங்கள் இல்லை. மன்னிக்கவும்.

ஆனால், இவற்றைப் பற்றியெல்லாம் பின்னொரு சமயம் எழுத முயற்சிக்கிறேன். 8-)

மாறாக – என் பார்வையில் – குழந்தைகளுடனான ஒரு குடும்பச் சூழலில்,  சராசரித் தர (அறிவு, பொருளாதாரம், பார்வை, அனுபவங்கள் இன்னபிற) பெற்றோர்களால் – தங்கள் வீட்டில், தொலைக்காட்சியில்லாமல் என்னதான் செய்யக் கூடும் என்பதை மட்டுமேதான் இப்பதிவில் விவரிக்கப் போகிறேன்; இங்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான விஷயம்: எனக்குத் தெரியும் – நானும் ஒரு சராசரித்தனமான ஆள்தான் – அகஸ்மாத்தாக ஒரு கணவன், தந்தை போன்ற பல பாத்திரங்களில், குணசித்திர வேடங்களில் நடிப்பவன்தான். இன்னும் முக்கியமாக, நான் ஒரு அறிவுஜீவி கிறிவுஜீவியென்றெல்லாம் இல்லை.

ஆகவே, கடந்த சுமார் 30 வருடங்களாகத் தொலைக்காட்சியின் கிட்டவே போகாமல் காலம் தள்ளியிருக்கும் ஒரு சாதாரணன்  என்கிற முறையில் மட்டுமே இந்தக் கேள்வி-பதில் நடைப் பதிவு நீளும்.  யோசித்துப் பார்த்தால், இந்தக் கேள்விகளை எல்லாம், என்னிடம் பலபேர் பல சமயங்களில் கேட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்; விதம் விதமான பதில்களையும் பெற்றிருக்கிறார்கள். இரண்டு நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு கூட, ஒரு நண்பர் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். அவர் மகனை, மேதகு சோட்டாபீம் அவர்களிடமிருந்து மீட்க வேண்டுமாம்.  ஆக, இந்தப் பதிவு; வழக்கம்போல, யாம் பெற்ற பேறு, பெருக இவ்வையகம் !

Foreword:

This is a rant about the seemingly unbridgeable  dichotomy between ‘doers‘ and ‘talkers.’

… It is amidst a lot of difficulties created by the ‘Talkers’ that, our Civilizations have progressed. Lately, I am becoming sick of having to patiently listen to the talkers who seem to have all the great ideas and appropriate solutions to address and solve ALL problems of the world;  they wail in high decibel shrill  tones that nobody is acknowledging their contributions and initiatives… This makes me sad. :-( Read the rest of this entry »

We (at the ErdKinder environment, I mean 12 – 16 year oldsyoungs in our Montessori classroom) get (also) to ‘see’ a lot of  films and this ‘Our Daily Bread’ happened to be one of those. And,  we had some discussions centred around the film – and, the children had a written ‘test’ to boot a few days later, to collect their thoughts and reflections. More on this, and the content of the ‘question paper’ further down this post…

For anyone who is even remotely concerned with the  food (and by extension, our dear life)  related issues that our world is facing and especially the mass production and consumption angles – this film is a heart wrenching reminder of the grim situation. The film has little commentary, anyway the moving images speak volumes and volumes – technically also, it is one of the most canonically produced pieces of cinema verite.

This is a very fine essay titled ‘the six myths about engineering that you should know‘  – a MUST read for all the desperate & demon possessed parents, who want their children (most of whom, unfortunately & firmly are still tucked into the wombs of their mothers, reluctant to be born, very understandable too, given the helicopters) to become a dakkutor or an ingineeer or (god forbid) an IT goofball…

These parents want their wards to start preparing for IIT JEE (thru FightJEE, DieJEE, RamJEE, F**kJEE whatever) the moment the hapless children get delivered!

These parents obviously know that a valuable 9 months’ time has been completely squandered by their children, while they were rotting in the womb, doing nothing but floating around and generously kicking their mothers! grrr Read the rest of this entry »
