I had a good hearty laugh. Thanks for taking the time to write about me repeatedly. I did read Mamallan’s article. Before I say anything let me say I’ve read AM’s இன்று, ஒற்றன் and a few collections of columns. Both ‘இன்று’ and ‘ஒற்றன்’ were pedestrian.Only recently I bought his 2 volume short story collection and I’m yet to read what many cite as his best work ’18-ஆம் அட்சக்கோடு’ (I do have it too). After reading Koestler’s ‘Darkness at noon’ and Milan Kundera’s ‘Unbearable lightness of being’ I dread reading ’18-ஆம் அட்சக்கோடு’ . I tried my best NOT to comment on that Mammallan column simply because I did not want to sound like a gramophone record.
I did read your blog on AM+Zhivago. I stand by my blog. I used public sources and his column. You spoke to somebody in person and that’s not my problem. Further AM made a fool of himself after claiming that Akilan’s award was given in the midnight (or some innocuous time). Then he retracted it but no apology or reason for how such a blunder happened.
Yes I’ve read Jeyamohan’s ‘நமது கோட்டையின் கொடி’. And no, I’ve no interest in reading AM in English. But I’d add that AM is a translator’s delight simply because there are no difficult phrases, no dazzling linguistic turns and the stories themselves are told, as you all say, in simple prose. I say the previous observation not as a ding against the translator but as a simple factual statement. For instance translating Venmurasu will be a real challenge. Translating ‘புலி கலைஞன்’ is a walk in the park.
Now, coming to your constant barrage of my anti-Indian attitude. First, you are completely wrong on Thapar’s ‘Somanatha’. And Irfan Habib was right on the Bharata Mata affair. Thanks to the controversy I went looking for clues and found a good book. Check out “Goddess and the nation: Mapping mother India” by Sumathi Ramaswamy.
Second, I think I’ve read and bought more books on India than the common “Bharata Mata Ki Jai” guy. Here’s another book you might want to check out (if you’ve not already read it) “Nucleus and Nation: Scientists, International networks and Power in India” by Robert S. Anderson. If only such books were written by Indians.
Incidentally I checked with P.A.Krishnan, an avid bird watcher and highly erudite, about whether books on Falconry exist in India. The answer is, no. Books on falconry have been written in the west for more than 5 centuries and not a single book in India. Is that not interesting? Also, to my knowledge, there’s not much (or nothing) writing about nature in India.
My only complaint about your blogs is the head-scratching style.
I wish you well in your endeavors and your mission to teach kids.

Dear ArvindK, thanks for putting up with me, especially considering the established fact that I can barely putup with myself.
I feel (and know) that you are a very capable man, given to agitated modes of responses on ethical grounds. I like your writings and your erudition, after all how many of us even read one book per month?
But I am aghast (often times) that you write in-extenso about stuff on which you seem to have only semibaked opinions based on tenuously abysmal knowledge. I really feel that you DO NOT need to do this.
The reason is, grrrr, it is MY forte and my territory – so don’t you mess with me…
Seriously now – your points noted; have read both SumathiR and RobertA. One of these days, I hope to write a longish essay on the infamous Somanatha of RomilaT, but the very thought of again dealing with folks steeped in the tradition of intellectual dishonesty and palpable scholarship coupled with unbridled arrogance makes me take a deep breath, and… (I even wrote in longform about this – with references and all, to EPW – but alas (=of course!) they did not publish it; let me see whether I can fish it out from my archives of yore)
L’affaire Zhivago: I feel that you got the context COMPLETELY wrong as I detailed it out – you have used the time-honoured and fake principle of the Occam’s Razor; and again, just because some random ‘public information’ exists it is not that it can be made use of as if it were some trustworthy, archival and verified source material; if it were so, then USA never landed folks on the moon. And, holocaust was brought upon themselves by the Jews; that is, if the whole idea were not a pure figment of imagination of the Zionists. And of course ‘vedic’ Indians knew the principles of Rocketry. The phallacy of this mode of operating on and arriving at conclusions based on ‘information that is public’ is endless. Bottomless. Sorry.
I do not generally reveal who I talked to get a cluon/bit – because in the past (2011) when I did it, it landed quite a few of my contacts in DireStraits. The Sultans of Swig aka Dravidian Goons and their machinations are not to be underrated. I do not know whether you have been manhandled before. I have been, quite a few times – just for voicing my opinions based on logic. I do not want to wear these kinds of eminently forgettable mishaps like a medal, but it is the prize that one has to pay, that’s all. So, even as I respect the privacy of my dear friends/contacts, I have also tended to protect my privacy.
But I do not make up stuff vis-a-vis these kinds of ideas, though when I do it for the reasons of ‘humour’ I clearly mark it as ‘rasak-kuraivaana nagaichchuvai’ or something like that.

I do not know much about KrishnanPA – have barely read a few of his essays (may be in Kalachchuvadu, am not sure) of his and a book – pulinagak-konrai or somesuch thing – and I do not know much of his oeuvre (marks-cyst?); and with my limited knowledge, I would also say that Falconry books are not there in Indic languages. But there ARE nature writings, will dig up refs sometime; right now, I do not have access to my library – as it has been split across 3 households and 4 schools. Shame on me.
Thanks for your best wishes – But, it is NOT my mission to teach & learn with kids. Would say, I merely enjoy doing it like many other things I pretend to do. I am an unapologetic seeker of happiness, and I suppose my Indian constitution allows it too, yeah?
Oh well.
I may violently disagree with you on many counts, but I also do ferociously agree with you on many other counts. Such is my (and your) lot.

Sabaash, arumaiyaana potti….Romila Thapar, Irfan Habib and other left-oriented historians revel in bad-mouthing Indian ethos and traditions, in the mistaken notion that all good things that India can be really proud of, were because of foreign rulers who subjugated India, which stretched from Iran to Burma not very long ago. And long ago, Indian/ Hindu traditions were the bedrock of geographical extensions of what was then sub-continental India…
And Mr. Kannaiyan, Modi is here to make all the difference now. With time, may be an uninterrupted run of 10 years for him upto 2024, India will definitely be on a higher growth trajectory and eventuallly catch up with USA…You may consider returning to India well in time, so you/ your family can enjoy the best of both worlds – you will live in America now and your kids may prosper in India after sometime…;)

For those who swear by Ms Thapar I suggest their reading Koenraad Elst’s Indology site.
As for Irfan habib two recent statements show that he should stick to his knitting. He said that the river Saraswati is a fantasy. From the early 80s there is a great deal of geological evidence on the river and much literature as well. He said that RSS was responsible for the bloodshed in Punjab at the time of the partition. RSS had little presence there and the fight was between the sikhs and the Muslims. So much for his balance
I stopped trusting the Marxist historians when my eyes were opened to the local records, diaries and narratives of the Moplah rebellion in the kerala Goverment records in the 60s and 70s. Sir Sankaran Nair’s book gives a lie to the manufactured history of EMS and the leftists. The larger number of Thiyya agricultural labour did not join the Moplahs as it was clearly seen as a religious uprising under the Khilafat flag (unwittingly and for many fatally supported by Gandhiji) with wholesale murders of ordinary Hindus , conversions and rapes, one of the bloodiest periods of Malabar history. And I discovered that their approach is based on a false moral equivalence.
The reaction of these historians to those who disagree with them is to question their credentials as they are unable to dispute facts.
