மாறாக – என் பார்வையில் – குழந்தைகளுடனான ஒரு குடும்பச் சூழலில், சராசரித் தர (அறிவு, பொருளாதாரம், பார்வை, அனுபவங்கள் இன்னபிற) பெற்றோர்களால் – தங்கள் வீட்டில், தொலைக்காட்சியில்லாமல் என்னதான் செய்யக் கூடும் என்பதை மட்டுமேதான் இப்பதிவில் விவரிக்கப் போகிறேன்; இங்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான விஷயம்: எனக்குத் தெரியும் – நானும் ஒரு சராசரித்தனமான ஆள்தான் – அகஸ்மாத்தாக ஒரு கணவன், தந்தை போன்ற பல பாத்திரங்களில், குணசித்திர வேடங்களில் நடிப்பவன்தான். இன்னும் முக்கியமாக, நான் ஒரு அறிவுஜீவி கிறிவுஜீவியென்றெல்லாம் இல்லை.
ஆகவே, கடந்த சுமார் 30 வருடங்களாகத் தொலைக்காட்சியின் கிட்டவே போகாமல் காலம் தள்ளியிருக்கும் ஒரு சாதாரணன் என்கிற முறையில் மட்டுமே இந்தக் கேள்வி-பதில் நடைப் பதிவு நீளும். யோசித்துப் பார்த்தால், இந்தக் கேள்விகளை எல்லாம், என்னிடம் பலபேர் பல சமயங்களில் கேட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்; விதம் விதமான பதில்களையும் பெற்றிருக்கிறார்கள். இரண்டு நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு கூட, ஒரு நண்பர் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். அவர் மகனை, மேதகு சோட்டாபீம் அவர்களிடமிருந்து மீட்க வேண்டுமாம். ஆக, இந்தப் பதிவு; வழக்கம்போல, யாம் பெற்ற பேறு, பெருக இவ்வையகம் !

Very interesting guy, this Daniyal.
I chanced upon a short article in ‘Outlook’ – an otherwise execrable & shady (Indian) magazine – in the ‘waiting room / lounge’ of a local dentist – no, I was not the one with random tooth issues. ;-)
This article talked about how good this Daniyal guy is and stuff — and I got curious… (there was also a picture of him (as under) that would qualify him as a veritable ‘hunk!’)
Daniyal, who is also apparently a practising farmer (earlier avatars included being a Newyork lawyer and stuff) is good with his language, almost RK Narayan-like – in terms of telling an universal story from the particular point of view of a culture, while using a simple story line and leisurely snapshots based character development. சென்னை. மெட்றாஸ். ஆமாம். இது நடந்து சுமார் இருபத்தெட்டு வருடங்களாகி யிருக்கும் என நினைக்கிறேன்.
அப்போதெல்லாம், என்னுடன் ஒரு சிறு கூட்டம் அலைந்து தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும், நான் சொன்னதையெல்லாம் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு, கேள்வியே கேட்காமல் என்னை மேலெழும்ப விடாமல், சராசரித்தனத்திலேயே அமுக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது அது. நானும் ஒரு மேதாவி என்றெல்லாம் பிரமையில் மூழ்கியிருந்த காலம். எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் எனக்கு திட்டவட்டமான, மிகக் கறாரான பதில்கள் இருந்த நாட்கள் அவை… இப்போது இருப்பதை விட, கொஞ்சம் அதிகமாகவே நக்கலும், கிண்டலும் என்னிடம் இருந்தன என நினைக்கிறேன். :-( ம்ம்ம் B-)!
ஆழ்ந்த, பரவலான படிப்பும், சமகால அரசியல் அறிவும் நுண்மான் நுழைபுலம் அறியும் பக்குவமும் எனக்கு இருப்பதாகவும், தொழில் நுட்பப் படிப்பில் சிறந்து விளங்குவதாகவும் பலப்பல புல்லரிப்புப் பிம்பங்கள், மனப் பிரமைகள், பிறழ்வுகள்…
என்ன சிக்கலில்லாத உலகம் அது! எதனைப் பற்றியும் என்னால் ஏதாவது சொல்ல முடிந்தது. எந்தப் பிரச்சினைக்கும், இடியாப்பச் சிக்கலுக்கும் என்னிடம் ஒரு தீர்மானமான தீர்வு இருந்தது.
கருப்பு-வெள்ளை ரீதி சார் எளிமையான உலக அவதானிப்பில் தயக்கங்களுக்கும், தர்ம மயக்கங்களுக்கும், கருணைக்கும், மென்மைக்கும் இடமே இருந்ததில்லை. ஒரே கறார் தான். ஒரே விமர்சனப் பார்வைதான். வெட்னா ஒண்ணு துண்டு ரெண்டுதான்.
எதனையும் ஏதோ ஒரு கோட்பாட்டு டப்பாவுக்குள் அடைத்து விட முடிந்தது. அந்த டப்பாவை மிகுந்த தன்னம்பிக்கையுடன் ஆட்டி ஆட்டி குடுகுடுப்பைக்காரத்தனமாக அதிகப் பிரசங்கம் செய்ய முடிந்தது. இடக்கையால் ஒவ்வாததைப் புறம் ஒதுக்குவதும் மிக லகுவாக இருந்தது… கூட நான் பேசுவதை ஆமோதிக்க, கேள்வியே கேட்காமல் வழிமொழிய, ஒரு சிறு கும்பலும் இருந்தது.

இந்த வருடம் ஜூன் மாதம் 14ஆம் தேதி தொடங்கி செப்டெம்பர் 20 வரை, பெரும்பாலான தினங்களில் (=ஏறக்குறைய 55 நாட்கள்), காலை நேரக் கூட்டுப் பிரார்த்தனைக்குப் பின் 20-22 நிமிடங்கள் (மொத்தமாகச் சுமார் 1100 நிமிடங்கள் – குறைந்த பட்சம் 18 மணி நேரங்கள்) ஹோமர்-ன் இந்த இதிஹாசங்களை – Iliad + Odyssey – ஒரு கதை (பேருரையல்ல. மன்னிக்கவும்) போலச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன்.

I’ve read the Odyssey and the Iliad a few times, soaked in them (not in the original Greek though, sadly), I respect them – but nothing that I have ever read so far, comes even reasonably close to that grand epic mahabharatha.
It is not because, I am from India or anything that I think so about mahabharata. I would consider the likes of Kurosawa Akira, Johannes Sebastian Bach, Dawn Upshaw, Parveen Sultana, Kiri Te Kanawa, M S Subbulakshmi (this listing is delightfully endless..) – not to mention ‘The Brothers Karamazov,’ ‘Remembrance of things past’ etc etc – all part of my tradition & hoary past too! In my view, all great and grand things & people of the world are part of our common tradition. Ahem!

the legend of matajuro

One of the most ‘deep’ and clueful stories in the yoga – dhyaana – buddhism – shinto – zen – performing_martial_arts continuum, in my humble opinion, is the story of Yagyu Matajuro.
However, nowhere on the web could one find a good coverage or an even a faithful reproduction of the story. It is in this context that I am reproducing here, the story as retold / written by Dave Lowry (Autumn Lightning – The education of an American Samurai / Shambala / 1985 / isbn 1 57062 115 2) in his eminently readable autobiographical work.
This story is narrated in ‘Autumn Lightning’ in the context of ‘zanshin’ – constant peripheral awareness, concentration and attention at all times – the ‘continuing mind,’ if you will.
And, I have used the story – many a time, in my sessions / training programmes – in significantly useful ways – whether it was for newbie employees / team members or for school going adolescent kids.
I have been fortunate enough to have been privy to very interesting discussions and thought fragments on that beast called ‘work ethic‘ and its cousins ‘unswerving focus‘ & ‘awareness‘ – subsequent to group readings of this legend and improvised theatrical enactments based on it. I used to have a loosely translated Tamil version of this legend fogr distribution to Tamil knowing kids, but I seem to have misplaced it, which is rather sad, but then…

And — Oh, the story of the impromptu DNA double helix structure…
சில நாட்கள் மிக அழகாகக் கழிந்து விடுகின்றன – குழந்தைகளுடைய குதூகலப் போக்கில் அவர்களுடன் ஒத்திசைந்து போவதில்.
சென்ற இரண்டு வாரங்களில் பெரும்பாலான நாட்கள் மப்பும் மந்தாரமுமாகவே கழிந்தன. பகல் வேளையிலேயே ஒரே ஜிலுஜிலுப்பு, மதிய வேளையில் பூந்தூரல்… கருகும்மென்று மேகம் நிரம்பிய வானம் திடீரென்று சில சமயம் எட்டிப் பார்க்கும் வெயில். மனதிற்கு, ஆன்மாவிற்கு அற்புதச் சுகமளிக்கும் (ஆனால் பரிசுத்த ஆவியை வேலைவெட்டியற்றுத் தட்டியெழுப்பாத) தருணங்கள்.
தலைக்குள், உணவுப் பாதைக்குள் செரட்டனின் ந்யூரோ ட்ரான்ஸ்மிட்டர்கள் அநியாயத்துக்குச் சுரந்து, இப்பூவுலகில் அனைத்தும் இனியன இனியன என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டேயிருந்தன… இருந்தாலும் மெலிதான துக்கம் படர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. (அடிப்படைப் புரிதல் #1: அய்யய்யோ! சுஜாதாத் தனமாக எழுத பிரயத்தனப் படவேண்டிய அவசியமேயில்லையா?)
… எங்கள் பள்ளியில் ஆஹாவென்று வளமாக வளர்ந்துள்ள பசும் பூச்செண்டு மரங்களினால், மழை நாட்களில் பல வகுப்பறைகள் இருட்டாகவே இருக்கும். குழல் விளக்குகளை உபயோகிக்கலாம்தான் – தொடர்ந்து வகுப்புகளை நடத்தலாம்தான். ஆனால், இம்மாதிரி சமயங்களில் நாங்கள் எல்லோரும் வகுப்பறைகளை விட்டு வெளியே வந்து விடுவோம். ஆஹா! நான் உண்மையிலேயே மிகவும் பாக்கியம் செய்தவன். எனக்குத் தொடர்ந்து கிடைக்கும் அற்புதச் சந்தர்ப்பங்களும், கதவு திறப்புகளும் – என்னைக் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக ‘ நல்லூழ்’ என்றெல்லாம் பேசவைத்து, ‘கர்மா’ கோட்பாடுகள் கிட்டே அழைத்துக் கொண்டு போய், பின்னர் என்னை ஒரு ஆத்திகனாகவே ஆக்கி விடுமோ என்று நினைத்தால்… அய்யய்யோ. :-(
ஆனால், பாதகமில்லை. :-)

Friday saw the elementary children, well, in their Ag, Au and Pt.
The school closed slightly early on Friday – so that the upper elementary children could get back to the school later in the evening, eagerly looking forward to a night of star watching.
Now, many of these upper elementary children have been working on the ideas of the universe for quite a while. Also, the school seems to have acquired a brand new and a very fine (high resolution) astronomical telescope recently – the details of which I would share with you later. The so called ‘traditional wisdom’ has it that ‘little boys will always be little boys’ and so by extension, ‘little girls will always be little girls.’
How I have always resented, if not deeply hated the set of unjust assumptions and squirmed whenever such statements were uttered by folks who should know better… But, whatever little that I could do – either in my class or elsewhere – and whenever I see a hint of this asinine stereotyping, I try my best to debunk it.
In fact, I would say with arrogant conviction that, the girls in my classes tend to eventually outshine, outsmart, outmaneuver and outclass the boys – this would be in ALL subjects. Read the rest of this entry »

Yes.
In spite of what Douglas Hofstadter has to say about music (on as to why we love it), groups like Pink Floyd seem to have been able to make some good music that is likely to live far beyond that of the bands or their members.

Sri Wendell Berry happens to be one of my favourite poet-essayist-novelist-farmer-educationist-activist swarajists (if there is such a term), who practices what he sermonizes. And, I am sure you would agree that this species of real swarajists is a fast dwindling one and is truly endangered.
Au contraire, this species can also be dangerous, as they can look at the world through new possibilities, contexts and history – and question & undermine our uncalled-for assumptions. We merely need to be open, that’s all.

ஷங்கர்தா ((1943 – 91) என எங்களில் சிலரால் வாஞ்சையுடன் அழைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு மகத்தான மனிதநேயவாதி கொலை செய்யப்பட்டு 22 ஆண்டுகள் உருண்டோடி விட்டன. இன்று உயிருடன் அவர் இருந்திருந்தால் அவருக்கு 70 வயதாகியிருக்கும். ஃபெப்ரவரி 14 பிறந்தவர் அவர்.

நாம் ஒரு கோளத்தை (sphere) ஒரு கனசதுரத்துக்குள் (cube), முன்னதை நசுக்காமல், பின்னதைப் பிதுக்காமல் – அடைக்கிறோம் என்று நினைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். அதாவது ஒரு டென்னிஸ் பந்தை, அதற்கென்றே வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு சதுர டப்பியில் (டப்பாவின் பெண்பால்) வைக்கிறோம் எனவும் நினைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம்.
இப்போது, கிட்டத்தட்ட அந்தக் கோளத்தின் விட்டம் = டப்பியின் ஒரு ஓரத்தின் நீளம்தானே?
மேலும், விகிதாச்சாரமாக (proportion) இதனைப் பார்க்கும்போது, அந்தக் கோளத்தின் கொள்ளளவு, அது இருக்கும் டப்பியின் கொள்ளளவில் மிகப்பெரிய பகுதியாகத்தானே இருக்க வேண்டும், அல்லவா?
ஃப்பூ! இதென்ன பெரிய விஷயம் என்கிறீர்களா? என்ன கிழவா சொல்ல வருகிறாய் என்று கேட்பீர்கள் கூட! இருங்கள்…

எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த காமிக் – கால்வின் அண்ட் ஹாப்ஸ் (Calvin and Hobbes). சமூக விமர்சனம் என்கிற போர்வையில் ஆனால், பல தளங்களில் சஞ்சரித்த, சஞ்சரிக்கும் மகத்தான இலக்கியம் – பில் வாட்டர்ஸன் (Bill Watterson) என்கிற கலைஞன் (டாக்டர் அல்ல) வாழ்க்கையைக் குழைத்து அழகாகச் செதுக்கி நமக்கு அளித்தது… (இதெல்லாம் நம் தமிழில் வெளிவர முடிந்தால் எவ்வளவு நன்றாக இருக்கும்!)
டிஸெம்பர் 31, 1989-ல் வெளிவந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை பெரிய கார்ட்டூன் இது. வசதிக்காக பிய்த்துப் பிய்த்துக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறேன். தமிழ்ப் படுத்தியும் இருக்கிறேன்.

கடந்த பத்து நாட்களாக நான் பணி புரியும் பள்ளிகளில் கிறிஸ்த்மஸ்-புதுவருடப்பிறப்பு விடுமுறைக்கு முன்னால் முடிக்க வேண்டிய வேலைகள் ஏராளமாகக் குவிந்திருந்தன. ஒருவழியாக இன்று மாலை அவற்றை முடித்தேன். அலுப்போதி அலுப்பு.
ஆனால், திடீரென்று மாலையில், மனைவிக்கும் (=துணைவிக்கும்) எனக்கும் அழைப்பு.
ஆக, கலாபினி அவர்களின் ஒரு இரண்டு மணிநேர மெஹ்ஃபில் போகும் வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்தது இன்று. எங்களையும் கலைஞர்களையும் சேர்த்து 20-30 பேர் கச்சேரியில் இருந்திருந்ததால் அதுவே அதிகம் சஞ்சய் தேஷ்பாண்டே அவர்களின் தப்லா. விரல்களாடும் நாட்டியம்.
