வித்யாதர் ஸூரஜ்ப்ரஸாத் ‘ஸர் விடியா’ நைபால், பாண்டி லிட்ஃபெஸ்ட் – சில குறிப்புகள்

எவ்வளவுதடவை இந்த எனிக்மா ஆஃப் அரைவலைப் படித்திருப்பேன். மாணிக்கம்.
…எல்லாரும் போய்ச்சேரத்தான் வேண்டும் – இருந்தாலும், இவருடைய இறப்பு, கொஞ்சம் கஷ்டமாக இருக்கிறது. ஏதேதோ பழைய நினைவுகள் – நானும் என் மனைவியும் இவருடைய எழுத்துகளை மாய்ந்து மாய்ந்து படித்துவிட்டுப் பேசிக் கிறங்கியிருப்பது உட்பட.
+ நம்முடைய செல்ல விளிம்புக் களிம்பாளரான சாரு நிவேதித அரைகுறையாரின் நண்பக் காமாந்தக தருண்தேஜ்பால் அரைகுறை, விடியாவை பாரிஸ் ரிவ்யூ இதழுக்காக பேட்டி எடுக்கிறேன் பேர்வழி என்று மூக்குடைபட்ட தமாஷ், எனக்கு திடீரென்று நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது.
சர்வ நிச்சயமாக, ‘விடியா’ எழுத்தாளர்களின் எழுத்தாளர் மட்டுமல்லர், அவர் ஒரு ஜொலிக்கும் நேர்மையாளரும்கூட – துளிக்கூடப் பூசி மெழுகலில்லாமல் தம் மனதிற்குச் சரியெனப் பட்டதைப் பேசியெழுதி, அரசியல்சரித்தனமான பேடித்தனமில்லாமல் பட்டவர்த்தனமாக இயங்கி – தொழிற்சுத்தத்துடன் இருந்தவர்.
இவர் போல, தமிழிலக்கியத்தில் இயங்கும் ஒரு அண்மைய ஆசாமியைச் சுட்டலாமென்றால் – பட்டவர்த்தனம் பொறுத்தவரை, ஓரளவுக்கு, ஓரளவுக்குத்தான், நம் ஜெயகாந்தன் – இப்போது ஏறத்தாழ, நான் அறிந்தவரை எவருமே இப்படி ‘எமக்குத் தொழில் எழுத்து’ என இல்லை என்பது கொஞ்சம் சோகம்தான்; ஆனால், அடுத்த தலைமுறை இளைஞர்கள் – எனக்குத் துளிக்கூட அறிமுகமில்லாதவர்கள் (என் பிரச்சினைதான்; அலுப்பின் காரணமாக தமிழ்ப்புனைவுகளைப் படிப்பதையே, புதிய அறிமுகங்களைப் பெறுவதையே ஏறத்தாழ நிறுத்திவிட்டேன்) இப்படி இருக்கலாமோ என்ன எழவோ!
பின்பின்குறிப்பு: முடிந்தால் பாண்டி லிட்ஃபெஸ்ட் (இப்படி ஒரு விஷயம் நடப்பது எனக்கு மிகவும் சந்தோஷத்தைத் தரும் விஷயம்) போய் அங்கு கொஞ்சம் காலட்சேபம் [பார்வையாளனாகத்தான், கவலைப் படாதீர்கள்! அமைப்பாளர்களும் கண்டகண்ட அற்பக் கழுதைகளைக் கூப்பிடவில்லை. ;-)] செய்யலாமோ எனவொரு எண்ணம். பார்க்கலாம்.
பின்பின்பின்குறிப்பு: அரி (அரை?) கொத்தியே எனும் இளைஞக் குளுவானுக்கு (இந்த ஆசாமியின் எழுத்துளறல்களைப் பலகாலமாக அறிவேன்) வரலாற்றறிவும் இல்லை – அதே சமயம் பொய்களை (அதாவது இந்த லிட்ஃபெஸ்ட் அமர்வுகள் எவ்வளவு மோசமான விஷயம்(!), இதனால் சகிப்புத்தன்மை குறையும்(!!), அரவிந்த ஆஸ்ரமவாசிகளுக்கு இது பிடிக்கவில்லை(!!!), புதுச்சேரி மக்களுக்கு இது ஏன் ஒத்துவரவில்லை(!!!!), டட்டடா டட்டடா டட்டடா….) கமுக்கமாக எழுதமுடிகிறது. இந்த வாந்திகளுக்குத் தளமைப்புத்தர ப்ரிண்ட்.இன் போன்ற காமாலைகள் ரெடி. கேட்கவா வேண்டும்? படித்துப் புளகாங்கிதமடையவும்.
அசப்பில், இந்த அரைகுறை நமக்குத் தெரிந்த இன்னொரு அரைகுறையாரைப் போலவே இல்லை? :-)

Surely Sir Vidia deserves much more than an “aside” in your blogs?
Is this all NDTV could do in an obituary? There is little about the well acknowledged great stylist in English that he was. There are factual errors like “High caste landowners ” a reference to his mothers family. Naipaul’s parents belonged to the same caste except that his mothers parents were better off. He was not “the son of an Indian civil servant” as described but the son of a Trinidadian journalist. Others are marginally better.
The emphasis in the Indian media is on the lurid. as well as on his anti Islamic books.The brutal honesty with which he described his personal life and failings is high lighted but the same honesty in his later travel writings where he has been factually right and quite prescient is scoffed. Disgusting journalism.
One needs to compare this to the longer and more balanced obits in the Western media to see how substandard our media is.
As a bibliophile I have a high place in my collections for the works of V S Naipaul and R K Narayan (signed and firsts) and it is perhaps not strange that he is seen through the jaundiced Lib/Left mirror though they are a pitiable lot.
To my email on this to my learned friend Prof Pingle he replied.
“Ignorentia non excusat”.
Perhaps a longer blog at least about his Indian books or the later travel writings?

Sir, I too wish I had written a loong note about Vidia. But vita brevis, ars longa, what else.
May be at least his mutinies book should be commented upon, what with its interesting content on Periyar and Dravidian scum.
I have a suggestion: please write your ideas on Vidia and then I will publish it. The thing is, I know that some good, knowledgeable people read the blog (dunno why they are so masochistic) and once in a while, some youngster comes along and thrills me too – whatever the reason.
Annanagar Ramesh is beckoning and gotta complete a post on him.
