ஏற்கனவே ஒரு ஆனந்தம் குட்டையைக் குழப்பிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். இப்போது ஒரு ஆனந்தன்.
கூடியவிரைவீக்கத்தில் வரவிருக்கும் ஆனந்தல் ஆனந்தள்… மானுடர்களுக்காக படுபீதியுடன் காத்துக்கொண்டே… (=air hair bun)

உள்ளேன் ஐயா! தேவைப்ப்டும்போது கூப்பிட்டால் ஓடோடி வந்து குழப்பத் தயார். குழப்பும் தொழிலே தெயவம் என்று நான் நம்புவதால் குட்டை, நெட்டை என்ற பாகுபாடெல்லாம் பார்க்கும் வழக்கம் எனக்குக் கிடையாது என்பதையும் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன்.

அந்தப் பாகுபாடின்மை தவிர, தாங்கள் — தேவையேயில்லாவிட்டாலுமேகூட ஓடோடிவந்து கருத்துகளை அள்ளிவீசும் பாங்குடையவர் (ஸ்டேட்? ஸிட்டி?? ஐஸிஐஸிஐ???) என்பதை யாம் அறிவோம்.
ஆகவே, தேவையற்ற தன்னடக்கத்தால் (=self burial banyan) அவதியுறவேண்டாம்.

I have read the same quote in your blog only, few years back. I have been discussing this quote with a couple of my friends in the last two days; though it’s easy to dismiss it as heavily coated version of “jack of all trades, master of none”, it throws light on the overall understanding of a society that one needs to have.
It’s intimidating because it portrays experts or specialists to be living in a shell with below-average view of the outside world other than their field of expertise. That sheer focus is what makes them specialists in their fields. They are meant to be very sub-standard in other walks of life. Isn’t that obvious?
It’s confusing because I think there is a context which I may be overlooking.

Sir, Prabhu – my two paise follow.
1. This is from a fantastic sf author, RAH, who was also into many other things; he was, essentially a DIY man.
2. The character who says this – Lazarus Long – is a methuselah kind of guy, who has realized his incredible potential, wise and all that.
3. The quote is about human potential. The things that ALL of us are capable of doing and more. It is about being multifaceted. It is about the exhilaration that comes when we manage to accomplish things on our own. It is about having respect for quality and dignity of labour. It is about being compassionate. It is about stick-to-itiveness, perseverence, improvisation. It is against gag-reflexes like ‘I dont do math’ ‘I cant swim’ ‘I am like that only’ – and FOR fearlessness.
4. Overall, it is one of the many models of the ‘art of the possible’ and I am such a sucker for stanislaw lem, ray bradbury, ursula le guin, RAH, robert anton wilson and the like…
5. So.
6. When he says ‘specialization is for insects’ – far from a superior feeling, it is about the otherwise wasted potential of homo sapiens. At least that’s how I interpret it.
