ஷிவ் விஸ்வநாதன் அவர்களை நான் பலபத்தாண்டுகளாக, ஏறக்குறைய அவர் எழுதுவதையெல்லாம் படித்து வந்திருக்கிறேன் என்கிற முறையில் – நான் தயங்காமல் சொல்வேன் – அவர் ஒரு பிரகாசிப்பு மிகுந்த சமூகஅறிவியல்சார் சிந்தனையாளர் மட்டுமல்லாமல், அழகான பல திடமான ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரைகளையும் எழுதியிருப்பவர்.
மேலும் – அவருடைய சில மாணவர்களின் கருத்தை ஒட்டி எழுதினால் – அவர் ஒரு செய்நேர்த்திமிக்க மாயாஜால ஆசிரியர் – அதாவது கருத்து-பண்பாட்டுப் புலங்களில் குறுக்காகவும் நெடுக்காகவும் புகுந்து அழகான கதைகளையும், கருதுகோள்களையும் நெய்யும் திறன் படைத்தவர். அவர் மாணவர்களை, தன் அறிவாற்றலின் வசீகரத்தால், அவர் ஒரு பாம்பாட்டி போல ஆட்டுவித்தார் (ஆட்டுவிக்கிறார்?) என்பது எனக்கு ஆச்சரியமாகவே இருக்கும் விஷயம்!
ஆனாலும் அவருக்குத் தன்னை ஒரு லிபரலாக கருதிக்கொள்வதுதான் சரியான வழியாக இருந்தது. இந்த ஒரு காரணத்தால், அவர் கட்டுரைகளை, கருத்தாக்கங்களை நொள்ளை சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருப்பேன். கடந்த பலவருடங்களில் இரண்டுமுறையாவது அவருடன் விவாதம் (அவர் பேச்சுகளுக்குப் பின் நடந்த உரையாடல்களின்போது) செய்திருக்கிறேன்… அவர் ஒரு மகாமகோ புத்திசாலி என்பதிலும், அவருடைய புரிதல்களின் ஆழத்தையும் வீச்சையும் பற்றி எனக்குச் சந்தேகமேயில்லை.
ஒரு விஷயத்தைச் சொல்லவேண்டும்: எனக்கு பல லிபரல் ஆசாமிகள் நண்பர்களாக இருந்தாலும், பொதுவாக, அவர்களின் (மார்க்ஸ் + மெக்காலே)/2 முட்டுச் சந்தினால் அவர்களுடன் உரையாடவே முடியாது. அவர்கள் பேசுவதை (=பேத்துவதை) பொதுவாக, நமட்டுச் சிரிப்புடன் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருப்பேன், அவ்வளவுதான். ஆனால், ஷிவ் விஸ்வநாதன் அவர்கள் ஒரு விதிவிலக்கு.

இப்படியாகத்தானே, வேலைவெட்டியற்று, வேண்டாவெறுப்பாக மே 22 அன்றைய ‘த அன்டி ஹிந்து’ தினசரியைப் புரட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்த போது ஷிவ் விஸ்வநாதன் அவர்களின் ஆங்கில மூலக் கட்டுரையைப் படித்தேன்.
ஆ… மறுபடியும் எனக்கு இந்த மனிதர் மேல் காதல் வந்துவிட்டது. கட்டுரையில், அவருடைய கூர்மையான அவதானிப்புகள் மிகுந்த பாணியில் – ஒரு எதிர்-ஸெக்யூலர் (=அமதச்சார்பின்மை) உள்ளோட்டமுள்ள, சுயபரிசோதனைசார்ந்த ஒரு நியாயவாத கட்டுரையை எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.
இதயபூர்வமான நடையிலான, ஒரு ஆன்மிக மீட்டெடுப்பு என்று கூட இதனைச் சொல்லிவிடுவேன். ஆக, ஆண்டாண்டு காலமான அவருடைய லிபரல்தனத்திற்கு அவர் பிராயச் சித்தம் செய்துகொண்டுவிட்டார்தாம்!

குறுஞ்செய்தி1: ஷிவ் காவிக்காரராக மாறிவிட்டார். அவருக்குப் பைத்தியம் பிடித்துவிட்டது.பாவம் அவர் மாணவர்கள்
குறுஞ்செய்தி2: ஷிவ் – உடைய ஆராய்ச்சி மனப்பான்மை என்ன ஆனது? தரவுகளே இல்லை. அவருடைய போர்க்குணம் மொண்ணையாகிவிட்டது.
குறுஞ்செய்தி3: ஷிவ் வேலை செய்யும் ஜிந்தால் கல்விக்கடை பெருமுதலாளிகளுடையது. அவர்கள் மோதியை ஆதரிக்காமல்… ஹிந்து வெறியர்கள் எல்லாரும்
குறுஞ்செய்தி4: மோதி-யினால் வாங்கப்பட்டுள்ள சோரம்போன அறிவுஜீவிகளின் பட்டாளத்தில் ஷிவ் ஐக்கியம்.
குறுஞ்செய்தி5: அடுத்து ஹிந்துவில் கிரீஷ் கர்னாட் யுஆர் அனந்தமூர்த்தி அவர்களுடைய சொந்த மோதி பஜனயை ஆரம்பிப்பார்களோ! அடக் கடவுளே!
குறுஞ்செய்தி6: ஷிவ் அய்யங்காரா?

Based on my reading of the election results and this article, I think Mr. Visvanathan (whom I also agree is brilliant and respect him a lot) has not done a full analysis and has come up with a somewhat of a premature conclusion.
To be more specific, the reasons why Modi won and why the Liberals lost are two different things. The Liberals (by that I mean UPA and its supporters) tried to sell what they had i.e. The plank of secularism/pseudo-secularism/minority interests, etc., whereas Modi sold what the voters wanted, i.e. The plank of development/governance/no corruption etc. From the results, it looks like the bulk of the voters obviously went for someone who would provide development and governance (yes, there are exceptions to this, like parts of UP, Bihar). In TN, Jaya did a similar thing, but was ahead of NDA/DMK, both in terms of the timing and the tone of the campaign against UPA and she got similar or better results than Modi.
My guess is that Modi would try to focus on the development route and stay away from the religious route as much as possible and if the development route does not succeed or stagnates, only then he may look at a religious detour. If we get into the next election with that assumption and if the UPA offers a combination of development and secular plank and people still go for Modi (development and religious planks), I would then say the Liberals lost to Modi.

Asifa, Zafar along with AMPLB schloar, an Imam and erstwhile of MD deutch bank participated in an all moslems discussion on what modi sarkar would do to moslems.

I was working upon a tamil write up of this debate. If I am not so lazy — should do it in a couple of days — with my limitations in tamil writing style.

This is a far better explanation and is closer to truth than the explanation given by shiv vishwanathan as it was a UP/BIHAR/GUJ sweep and liberal states still remained outside the modi wave

The media, busy retaining the secular image of India, did not realise how an average OBC viewed the rise of such a leader. His cutouts were bigger than those of Mr. Vajpayee or Mr. Advani. In this atmosphere, a section of upper castes — particularly Brahmins and Baniyas — seemed to have moved towards the Congress but the OBCs seemed to have voted en masse for their new hero. If Mr. Katiyar repeats this in Uttar Pradesh we will have one more hero, perhaps at the cost of more lives there.
There is a lesson here for the secularists and the communists. As Hinduism did not allow Dalits to get into temples they began to move towards Islam, Christianity and Buddhism. If the secularists and the communists do not allow the OBCs to grow in their organisations Mr. Modi will become their national leader and their Prime Ministerial candidate too. And in such a situation, feeble OBC voices like mine will be drowned.
