bharata natyam: false claims, false corrections & their rectification

October 25, 2025

A while ago, the Ministry of Culture (of Govt of India) came out with a tweet on bharatanatyam in good faith, which was canonically correct and backed up by evidence. There was no hearsay or stupidity involved at all, but then…

But then, thanks to the above harangue of our compatriot, the chastened Ministry even deleted its correct tweet in haste – of which, unfortunately I do not have a screenshot.

The sad fact is that, the OP has not obviously studied the Mahabharata Senapatheeyam & Mahabharata Chudamani, but passed off his baseless opinion as one from the books. Really worrisome. And then responding to the strong-advice of the OP, MoC deleted the correct/unoffending tweet. Oh the tragedy.

…I would not have posted these screenshots or wrote about the matter, but today, I was asked by a danseuse/bharatanatyam-performer about this ‘bharata’ etymology in the context of dance, and (it is not that am a repository of all knowledge, but I merely seem to know a bit of a few things in reasonable depth – that’s all!) she got into an argument with me, and then sent me the link to… to…the following tweet, to which anyway I had responded a while ago. The horror.

So much for the preamble.

Now, let us look at, just one of the claims of the original poster…

Since I have long since been blocked by the OP, “this post is unavailable” but the first screenshot in this post is that offending X-post of the OP.

Am not able to fathom the motivation or the fountainhead behind these kinds of passing off random stuff as knowledge.

Of course, one cannot anyway deny that OP has been consistently countering the stupid and vile narratives of the unlettered Tamils, AKA Dravidians – and to this extent he has been good to Tamil. All power to him of course.

But then, do things like the above frequently happen due to overenthusiasm? Or is it the attitude of “who the fuck will fact-check my words of wisdom? I have more followers than you!”

Whatever it is, it is what it is – and here’s hoping the lady won’t pester with me some other stupid counter with the forwarding of another pretentious link.

Oh the hope!
