   How old is this Dargah?

     The tomb must have existed from ~1450CE, IMO. But it may have been for some senior jihadi fighting vijayanagara forces, who got killed. (there are other such nondescript muslim burials down below in the hill)

     But, at least till 1957 it was not called a Dargah. Otherwise Dr Devakunjari would have mentioned it. She mentions Hindu and Muslim pilgrims though.

     1958 Madurai Gazetteer also does NOT mention it. Its earlier version of 1868 also did not.

     In late 1980s when I visited the alleged burial place – it was STILL called the tomb of a Fakir. Nobody talked about Sufi. The entire sufi thing has been made up post 1990s. There is no other earlier reference from scholars like crispin barefoot. susan bayly, mehrdad shokoohy et al.

     Also, typically the ‘sufi’ nonsense dargahs will NOT have any animal sacrifice associated with it – just to attract useful idiots from the hindu side and also to project ‘pacifism’ and the like.

     My young friend who grew up in the very area says till 2005 or thereabouts there was no kefuffle about kattle killing there – though the rabid jihadis were always upping their ante – especially during DMK rule times. It was being rebranded as a ‘dargah’ from around 2005 or thereabouts.

     The whole thing is ofcourse a jihadi effort to ratchet it up and fight ‘Hindu oppression’ bugbear – while otherwise the jihadis are ‘apparently’ against the closet-jihadi sufis, in the context of shirk.

       Sir, RC – Of course TRR is absolutely correct if he had said that (haven’t read him) and I was aware of it. (added at 19:43 2/5/2025: I think you and/or TRR didn’t mean ‘Apex court’ but the british raj mechanism/body called privy council in london)

       But, the thing with the Jihadis is that, court orders do not mean much to them AT ALL, if they can mobilize political support (read: Dravidians & Tamil Supremacists) and their own vociferous & violent ‘street fight/domination’ and ‘stone pelt’ and ‘gas cylinder blast’ and IED numbers. Which they WILL.

       It is not settled, sir.

       The only way to preempt these affairs from reoccurring is to shift (by mechanical and/or explosive skills) to the extent possible piecefully – the alleged dargah, in its entirety, to its well deserved & safe place – say like either Mecca or Medina. Or Anna Arivalayam can accommodate that, after all, Dravidian scum are the ardent supporters of the Jihadis.

       Jihadi muslims act like TCP/IP stuff – or in particular, CDMA, if you will; if they detect collision or opposition they may temporarily withdraw or sit tight – but will any way keep trying multi… and by allah they’d succeed.
